Lake Elmo is the rural buffer between Woodbury's suburbs and the St. Croix Valley, and it's one of my favorite places to shoot in the east metro. Lake Elmo Park Reserve alone gives you prairie, oak savanna, a swim pond and rolling trails across 2,000 acres, and the Old Village district downtown has the small-Minnesota-town storefronts couples want for their getting-ready and first-look photos.
Barn weddings here need a specific approach. Farmstead venues have gorgeous ambient light through the doors and almost none in the middle of the room, so I light for the space rather than the sensor: off-camera flash bounced into the rafters for dancing, and natural window light for everything before sunset. Being ten minutes from Stillwater also means the St. Croix bluffs are available for a sunset portrait run if your timeline has room.
