Minneapolis wedding venues cluster in four places: the Mill District and downtown along the river, the North Loop and Northeast across it, the mansions of south Minneapolis, and — a ten-minute drive east — downtown St. Paul. The suburbs add the estates, barns and gardens. Every venue below is in Minneapolis, St. Paul or within about forty-five minutes of downtown.

Capacities are the venue's own published maximums for the named room. A seated dinner with a dance floor and a head table runs well under that number — confirm your real count with the venue before you sign.

Best Minneapolis Wedding Venues

Asked which venues photograph best, I give the same short list every time: Mill City Museum for its Ruin Courtyard, The Machine Shop for floor-to-ceiling windows over the river, The Hutton House for west-facing windows that turn a 5pm summer ceremony gold, Nicollet Island Pavilion for the skyline across the river, and Landmark Center for a room guests remember. Downtown Minneapolis Wedding Venues

Downtown Minneapolis wedding venues sit within a few minutes of each other along the river — Mill City Museum, Nicollet Island Pavilion and Riverside Ballroom — which makes portrait logistics easy: the Stone Arch Bridge and the mill ruins are a short walk from all three. The Lumber Exchange Event Center and the Minneapolis Institute of Art add two of the city's grandest interiors, and Hewing Hotel covers the North Loop with a restored warehouse ballroom. Wedding Reception Venues in Minneapolis

Plenty of couples book the ceremony somewhere else — a family church, the Hennepin County courthouse, a park — and only need the room for dinner and dancing. That is a different search, and it comes with a different question: how many people sit down, and does the room still photograph well once the sun is gone and the dance floor lights come up. The venues below are the ones I've photographed receptions at, largest first.

Outdoor Wedding Venues in Minneapolis

Inside the city limits the outdoor options are Nicollet Island Pavilion's riverfront lawn with the skyline behind it, Mill City Museum's Ruin Courtyard — open to the sky inside the old mill walls — the gardens at 300 Clifton, and Aster Cafe's river patio. Just outside, Bavaria Downs, Outpost Center, The Hutton House and the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum all pair an outdoor ceremony with an indoor reception, which in Minnesota is the combination worth having. Unique Wedding Venues in Minneapolis

The rooms guests talk about afterwards: Mill City Museum's open-air courtyard inside a burned-out flour mill; the Minneapolis Institute of Art, where cocktail hour happens beneath the Bruce B. Dayton Rotunda; Surly Brewing's Scheid Hall above a working brewery; the Lumber Exchange, the oldest surviving skyscraper in the city; and Gale Mansion, a Stevens Avenue estate with a proper ballroom. In St. Paul, Landmark Center's five-storey Musser Cortile and Como Park's Sunken Garden are the two that photograph like nowhere else.

Small Wedding Venues in Minneapolis

Under about fifty guests, a large room works against you in photographs — empty chairs read as absence. Aster Cafe's Vista seats fifty and its River Room 180; Gale Mansion's main floor holds 100; Surly's Scheid Hall seats 136; Hewing Hotel's Andrews Ballroom 176. Minneapolis & St. Paul Wedding Venues

St. Paul is ten minutes east and has its own character — older, more formal, more stone. A'BULAE's sixth-floor ballroom and rooftop look back at the skyline; Landmark Center and The Saint Paul Hotel face each other across Rice Park; Union Depot fills a restored 1920s rail concourse in Lowertown; Como Park Conservatory holds ceremonies in a glasshouse garden year-round. Wedding Venues Near Minneapolis

Within forty-five minutes of downtown the choice widens to estates and barns: Bavaria Downs and Outpost Center in Chaska, The Hutton House on Medicine Lake, Earle Brown Heritage Center in Brooklyn Center, and JX Event Venue and the Stillwater Event Center on the St. Croix. Winter Wedding Venues in Minneapolis

Sunset lands before 4:30pm from November to February, so the question is not whether the room is pretty but whether it has usable window light in the afternoon and somewhere indoors for portraits.
