Downing is a tiny Dunn County village in the Hay River valley — deep countryside, century barns and open farmland about an hour east of the Twin Cities.

At this distance and scale, preparation matters more than gear. I arrive at least an hour early, confirm power and a covered rain plan, and walk the property lines to find the portrait spots — a fence line, a barn door, a gap in the treeline where the sun will set. Rural Dunn County has almost no light pollution, which also means night portraits under the stars are genuinely possible here in a way they never are inside the metro.
