The Perfect Minnesota Wedding Day Timeline (2026 Template)

After photographing 200+ Twin Cities weddings, I've learned that the timeline is the single biggest factor in whether the day feels calm or chaotic. Here are the hour-by-hour templates I send to every couple I book.

The Golden Rule

Build your timeline backwards from sunset. Minnesota sunset times vary wildly — June 21 is 9:03pm, October 15 is 6:23pm. Your golden-hour portraits should start 45 minutes before sunset.

Sample 8-Hour Timeline (Most Common)

Time Event
1:00pm Photographer arrives — getting-ready coverage starts
2:30pm First look (optional, recommended)
3:00pm Wedding party photos
3:45pm Family formals
4:30pm Tucked-away time / refresh
5:00pm Ceremony
5:30pm Cocktail hour + couple sunset portraits (15 min)
6:30pm Reception entrance + dinner
7:30pm Toasts
8:00pm First dance, parent dances
8:30pm Open dancing
9:00pm Photographer ends coverage

Sample 6-Hour Timeline (Budget-Friendly)

Skip getting-ready coverage; start at ceremony.

Buffer Time Is Non-Negotiable

Add 15 minutes between every transition. Hair and makeup runs late. Wedding parties scatter. Ubers don't show up. The day always takes longer than you think.

Minnesota-Specific Tips

  • Winter weddings (Dec–Feb): sunset is 4:30–5:00pm. Do portraits BEFORE the ceremony or you'll lose all natural light.
  • Outdoor ceremonies: budget 20 minutes for weather backup transition.
  • Lake Minnetonka boat ceremonies: factor 30 min for boarding/disembarking.
  • Tettegouche elopements: 90-min drive from Two Harbors to Shovel Point — build it in.
