What to Wear for Engagement Photos in Minnesota (2026 Style Guide)

What to Wear for Engagement Photos in Minnesota

I''m Emma Ziegler, a Minneapolis engagement photographer. I''ve shot 300+ engagement sessions across the Twin Cities and the #1 question I get every week is "what should we wear?" Here''s my honest 2026 style guide — by season, by location, and what to avoid no matter what.

Quick Answer

The 4 rules that always work: (1) coordinate, don''t match, (2) pick 2–3 colors total across both outfits, (3) one neutral + one statement piece per person, (4) avoid logos, neon, and tight patterns.

Spring Engagement Photos (April–May)

Soft pastels, cream, dusty rose, sage green, light denim. Think: floral midi dress + chambray shirt + clean white sneakers. Skip heavy coats — bring a light cardigan you can layer.

Summer Engagement Photos (June–August)

Linen everything. Cream, soft tan, ivory, terracotta, dusty blue. A flowing maxi dress is unbeatable. Avoid white-only outfits in direct sun — they blow out. Bring sandals or clean leather flats.

Fall Engagement Photos (September–October)

Rust, burgundy, mustard, deep green, camel, cream. A wool sweater + flowy midi skirt + ankle boots = peak Minnesota fall. Layer with a long camel coat for late October sessions.

Winter Engagement Photos (November–March)

Long wool coats, leather gloves, cream chunky knits, dark denim, ankle boots. Pop of red or burgundy scarves photograph beautifully on snow. Hand warmers in pockets are a must — I always bring extras.

Match Outfit to Location

  • Stone Arch Bridge / Mill Ruins: Industrial backdrops love neutral palettes — cream, tan, soft black. Avoid loud colors that compete with the limestone.
  • Lake Harriet / Minnehaha Falls: Soft greens, dusty blues, cream — colors that complement the natural setting.
  • North Loop / Downtown: Editorial city vibe. Black, white, soft tan, leather accents.
  • Como Park Conservatory: Florals and greenery everywhere — choose solid earthy tones so YOU pop, not your shirt.
  • North Shore / Tettegouche: Layers for unpredictable Lake Superior weather. Wool, denim, boots.

What to Avoid (No Matter the Season)

  • Logos, slogans, or branded apparel
  • Neon or fluorescent colors (they cast on skin)
  • Tight patterns (small stripes, polka dots) — they create moire on camera
  • Brand-new white sneakers (too bright; they pull the eye)
  • Strapless tops if you''re wearing a strapless wedding dress (you''ll want a different look for engagement)
  • Brand-new outfits you''ve never worn — comfort matters

Hair, Makeup, and Final Touches

Get your hair and makeup done professionally if it''s in your budget — even just makeup makes a major difference in photos. Bring a small bag with: lip balm, a brush, blotting papers, hand warmers (winter), a backup outfit option, and water.

Bring a Second Outfit

I plan most sessions with a quick outfit change halfway through — one casual and one dressed-up. It doubles the variety of your gallery and gives you save-the-date and social-media-ready images.
