After 200+ Twin Cities engagement sessions, here is exactly what works season by season — and the patterns/colors I quietly steer couples away from because they don't photograph well in our light.

In Minnesota, dress in warm neutrals and layers that suit the season: soft cream and sage in spring, warm terracotta and linen in summer, burgundy and wool in fall, and a statement coat with thermal layers in winter. Avoid stark white in bright summer light and pure black against snow, and coordinate outfits rather than matching them exactly.

Spring (Apr–May)

Soft cream, sage, dusty blue, mauve. Avoid stark white (blows out in our high-overcast spring sky). I love a midi dress + linen shirt combo. Brands I see work: Reformation, Doen, Buck Mason.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Lean warm — terracotta, butter, olive, rust. Linen, silk, gauzy cotton. Skip black (it shows every sweat mark and goes flat in Minnesota's harsh July sun).

Fall (Sep–Oct)

The best season for MN engagements, hands down. Burgundy, forest green, camel, cream wool. Boots are mandatory. A wool overcoat over a slip dress photographs unreal at Theodore Wirth or Minnehaha Falls.

Winter (Nov–Mar)

Layer for warmth, then strip down for the 90-second window. Cream coats over jewel-tone dresses photograph stunning against snow. Don't skip gloves and hats — winter portraits look fake when you're freezing.

Color choices should respond to where you are shooting, not just the season on the calendar. Warm neutrals and jewel tones stand out beautifully against brick and industrial backdrops in the North Loop or Northeast Minneapolis, while the same palette can wash out against a wall of fall foliage that is already doing a lot of color work on its own — that is where a simpler cream or camel earns its keep. Near water, at spots like Minnehaha Falls or Lake Harriet, mid-tone colors read best; pure white can blow out against bright reflected light off the water, and very dark colors can lose detail in the shadows under tree cover. Downtown skyline locations photograph well with a bolder single accent color, since the architecture around you is already busy enough without two competing patterns.

Adjusting for Minnesota's Unpredictable Weather

Minnesota weather can shift 15 degrees between the morning forecast and your golden-hour session, so plan outfits in layers you can add or remove rather than a single fixed look. A cardigan or unstructured blazer over a sundress covers both a warm afternoon and a cooling evening without changing the outfit itself. In shoulder seasons — April, May, September, and October — pack a coat you are willing to be photographed in, not just one to wear in the car, since it may end up in half your gallery.
