November Weddings in Minnesota: Light, Weather, Timing

A November wedding in Minnesota works best as an indoor-first day with a short, lovely window of outdoor light. NOAA's 1991-2020 daily normals for Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport fall from a 49.5°F high on November 1 to 34.7°F on November 30, and Saturday sunsets in November 2026 run from 4:53 to 4:34 PM.
If you are weighing late October against November, my October wedding guide covers the month before the clock change. This guide is about November itself: the time change, the first snow, Thanksgiving weekend, the deer opener and keeping everyone warm enough to enjoy it.
What is November weather like in the Twin Cities?
November is when Minnesota turns the corner into winter. NOAA's 1991-2020 monthly normals for the airport put the average high at 41.9°F and the average low at 27.7°F, with 1.61 inches of precipitation across 8.3 days of at least 0.01 inch. The low reaches 32°F or colder on 20.9 days in an average November, and on 6.6 days the high never climbs above freezing.
The month changes quickly. The daily normals show a high of 49.5°F and a low of 34.3°F on November 1, 42.1°F and 28.0°F on November 15, and 34.7°F and 21.0°F on November 30. The chance of at least 0.01 inch of precipitation on any one day sits between 28.0 and 29.8 percent all month.
So an early November date can still offer a crisp, coat-optional portrait. A late November date is a winter wedding in everything but name, and I plan it that way.
How likely is snow on a November wedding day?
Snow is possible, but it is not the default. The same NOAA monthly normals average 6.8 inches of November snowfall at the airport, spread over 4.5 days with measurable snow. Only 1.9 days bring an inch or more, and 0.6 days bring three inches or more. Snow cover of at least an inch averages 5.6 days in November, compared with 0.8 inch of total snowfall in October and 11.4 inches in December.
For photos, that means a fresh snowfall is a gift rather than something to plan around. The realistic November landscape is bare trees, brown grass and sometimes a dusting that melts by afternoon. I choose portrait spots that look good without snow: architecture, stone, evergreens, doorways and big windows. If snow does fall, we use it, and I leave extra time for guests driving on the season's first slick roads.
My Minnesota winter wedding photography guide explains how I photograph snow and cold once the season fully arrives.
What happens to the light when daylight saving time ends?
It drops by an hour overnight. NIST explains that daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday of November, which was November 1 in 2026 and falls on November 7 in 2027. Using the NOAA Solar Calculator for downtown Minneapolis, sunset is 6:02 PM on Saturday, October 31, 2026, and 4:53 PM one week later. That is 69 minutes of evening light gone between two consecutive Saturdays.
Couples planning for 2027 should notice the twist. Because the clocks change a week later, Saturday, November 6, 2027 is still on daylight time, with sunset at 5:55 PM. The table pairs sunsets from the calculator with each date's 1991-2020 daily normal high and low.
| Saturday | Sunset | Normal high | Normal low |
|---|---|---|---|
| November 6, 2027 | 5:55 PM | 46.8°F | 32.1°F |
| November 7, 2026 | 4:53 PM | 46.3°F | 31.6°F |
| November 13, 2027 | 4:46 PM | 43.1°F | 28.9°F |
| November 14, 2026 | 4:45 PM | 42.6°F | 28.4°F |
| November 21, 2026 | 4:39 PM | 39.0°F | 25.1°F |
| November 28, 2026 | 4:34 PM | 35.6°F | 21.9°F |
With sunset near 4:45 PM, my rule of starting the ceremony about three hours before sunset with a first look puts it near 1:45 PM. Without a first look, plan on roughly 1:00 PM, or accept that portraits after the ceremony will be lit with flash indoors. My chart of Minnesota sunset times by month shows how this compares with the rest of the year.
How do we plan an indoor-first November wedding?
Choose the venue for its light as much as its look. In November, the rooms that photograph best have large windows, a warm entry or lobby for quick portraits, and somewhere outdoors within a short walk. Browse Twin Cities wedding venues with that checklist in mind, and pick a getting-ready room with windows, because overhead hotel light is the least flattering light of the day.
A sample timeline for November 14, 2026
- 11:15 AM: Details and final dressing near a window.
- 12:00 PM: First look and 15 minutes of outdoor couple portraits, then back inside to warm up.
- 12:30 PM: Wedding party portraits, split between a short outdoor set and an indoor set.
- 1:45 PM: Ceremony.
- 2:15 PM: Family formals indoors.
- 3:00 PM: Cocktail hour.
- 4:15 PM: A ten-minute portrait break before the 4:45 PM sunset.
- 5:00 PM: Dinner, toasts and a fully lit reception.
Family formals move faster indoors when the list is written ahead of time, so read how to build a family formal photo list before the day. For a full cold-season approach, see my Minnesota winter wedding photographer page.
Should we avoid Thanksgiving weekend or the deer opener?
Neither is off limits, but both change who can come and how easily. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management's federal holiday schedule lists Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26, 2026 and Thursday, November 25, 2027.
- Guests may already be traveling to family that weekend, so send save-the-dates early and ask your closest people before you sign.
- Ask every vendor, including hair, makeup and catering, whether they work the holiday weekend before you book the venue.
- Hold hotel rooms early if many guests are flying in, and give them a clear plan for the airport.
- Remember the light: sunset on Saturday, November 28, 2026 is 4:34 PM, the earliest in the table above.
The deer opener matters in many Minnesota families. The DNR's hunting season dates show the firearms season opening Saturday, November 7, 2026, running through November 15 in 200 and 300 series permit areas and through November 22 in 100 series areas. In 2027 it opens Saturday, November 6. If hunters are on your guest list, ask them before you pick opening weekend, and ask rural venues whether hunting happens on or next to the property that weekend.
How do we stay warm for November portraits?
Plan warmth like any other vendor detail. The National Weather Service's cold weather safety page advises dressing in layers, covering exposed skin and staying out of the wind when possible, notes that mittens are better than gloves, and says to change into dry clothing right away if you get wet.
- A coat or wrap you love on camera, since it may appear in a third of your outdoor frames.
- Warm boots for the walk, with dress shoes carried in a bag.
- Thin thermal layers under suits and dresses.
- Hand warmers, a blanket that stays out of frame, tissues and lip balm.
- A warm staging room by the door, so outdoor portraits happen in bursts of about ten minutes.
- Mittens or blankets for guests at any outdoor moment, including a send-off.
Short bursts make better pictures anyway, because genuine smiles fade once people are shivering. If you like the idea of a cozy, candlelit celebration, my winter wedding photography page shows how that coverage comes together.
Frequently asked questions
Is November a good month to get married in Minnesota?
It can be, if you plan indoors first. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport average a 41.9°F high and 27.7°F low for November, and Saturday sunsets in 2026 fall between 4:53 and 4:34 PM. Pick a venue with good window light, schedule a first look, and treat any snow as a bonus rather than the plan.
What time is sunset in Minnesota in November?
For downtown Minneapolis, the NOAA Solar Calculator gives 4:53 PM on Saturday, November 7, 2026, 4:45 PM on November 14, 4:39 PM on November 21 and 4:34 PM on November 28. In 2027 the clocks change on November 7, so Saturday, November 6, 2027 still has a 5:55 PM sunset.
Does it usually snow in November in Minneapolis?
Some snow is normal, but not on most days. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals average 6.8 inches of November snowfall at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport over 4.5 days with measurable snow, and only 1.9 days with an inch or more. An inch or more of snow sits on the ground on 5.6 days in an average November.
Is it a bad idea to get married Thanksgiving weekend?
Not necessarily, but it takes extra planning. Thanksgiving falls on November 26, 2026 and November 25, 2027, so guests may already have family travel booked. Ask your closest guests and every vendor before you commit, send save-the-dates early, and remember that sunset on Saturday, November 28, 2026 is 4:34 PM in downtown Minneapolis.
When does deer hunting season open in Minnesota?
According to the Minnesota DNR's season calendar, the firearms deer season opens Saturday, November 7, 2026 and Saturday, November 6, 2027. In 2026 it runs through November 15 in 200 and 300 series permit areas and through November 22 in 100 series areas. If hunters are important guests, check with them before choosing opening weekend.
