Best North Shore Minnesota Elopement Locations (2026 Ranked Guide)

Best North Shore Minnesota Elopement Locations in 2026

I''m Emma Ziegler, a Minnesota elopement photographer based in Minneapolis. I shoot 10–15 North Shore elopements every year and this is my honest ranked list of where to elope on Lake Superior''s North Shore — with permit info, weather windows, and the lesser-known spots most couples don''t know exist.

Quick Answer

My top 8 North Shore elopement locations for 2026: Tettegouche State Park, Palisade Head, Split Rock Lighthouse, Gooseberry Falls, Artists Point in Grand Marais, Cascade River, Oberg Mountain, and Black Beach in Silver Bay.

1. Tettegouche State Park (Shovel Point)

Dramatic 200-foot cliffs over Lake Superior. 0.6-mile flat trail. Best for sunrise ceremonies — eastern-facing cliffs. State park wedding permit required ($25).

2. Palisade Head

The most dramatic cliff on the North Shore. Drive-up access, 5-minute walk to the edge. Best for sunset. No permit needed for ceremonies under 25 people on the overlook.

3. Split Rock Lighthouse

The iconic North Shore shot. Wedding permit through MN Historical Society ($250). Best at golden hour from the lakeshore below the lighthouse.

4. Gooseberry Falls State Park

Three-tier waterfalls. Most accessible North Shore park (off Highway 61, 1 hour from Duluth). State park wedding permit required.

5. Artists Point — Grand Marais

Volcanic rock peninsula jutting into Lake Superior. Lighthouse, harbor views, no permit for small ceremonies. Best in October for fall color.

6. Cascade River State Park

Multi-tier cascading falls 10 miles north of Lutsen. Less crowded than Gooseberry. Bring sturdy shoes.

7. Oberg Mountain

2.3-mile loop with 360° views of Lake Superior and inland forests. Peak fall color (late Sept) is unreal. Ceremony on the overlook bench.

8. Black Beach Park — Silver Bay

Underrated. Black-sand beach (taconite tailings) with red cliffs. Free, public, dramatic. Best at blue hour after sunset.

Permits & Timing

Minnesota State Parks require a $25 wedding/special-use permit for ceremonies of any size in most parks. MN Historical Society sites (Split Rock) require a $250 permit. National Park sites require federal permits. I help every elopement client navigate this — included in my elopement collection.

Weather Windows

Best months: late September to mid-October for fall color, mid-May to mid-June for wildflowers. Avoid mid-July to August (humidity, bugs, tourist crowds). Winter (Jan–Feb) ice elopements are stunning but require backup plans and shoulder-season risk acceptance.

Travel from the Twin Cities

Tettegouche, Palisade Head, Split Rock, Gooseberry: 3.5 hours from Minneapolis. Grand Marais, Cascade, Oberg, Black Beach: 4.5–5 hours. I include travel and a Friday lodging stipend in all North Shore elopement collections (starting at $1,800).
