Stone Arch Bridge Engagement Photos: Permits, Timing & Locations (2026)

It's the #1 engagement photo location in Minneapolis. I've shot 60+ sessions here. Here's everything I tell couples before we go.

Do You Need a Permit?

For most engagement sessions: no. Stone Arch Bridge and the adjacent Mill Ruins Park are public spaces. Casual portrait sessions without props, lighting equipment, or large parties are free to shoot.

You DO need a permit if:

  • You bring strobes or large softboxes on stands
  • Your party (couple + photographer + 4+ guests/family) exceeds 6 people
  • You're shooting a styled-shoot or commercial content
  • You want to reserve a specific spot exclusively

Permits go through Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board: minneapolisparks.org → Permits → Photography. Cost: $50–$100 depending on size. Apply 14+ days ahead.

For 95% of engagement clients I shoot, we don't pull a permit — and we're fine.

The 4 Best Framing Spots on Stone Arch

1. East-end pillars (skyline backdrop)

Walk to the east end (closer to Aria). Frame couple with downtown Minneapolis behind. Best at: 30 min before sunset, summer.

2. Mid-bridge arches looking west

The classic. Couple framed inside the limestone arches with the Mississippi River. Best at: Anytime — but mid-afternoon avoids the worst harsh sun.

3. Lower path (Mill Ruins Park looking up at the bridge)

Underrated. Ruins in foreground, bridge in background, lush ivy in summer. Best at: Golden hour, all seasons.

4. The walking path between the bridge and St. Anthony Main

Cobblestone, brick, mature trees. Quiet even on busy nights. Best at: Sunset for the fairy-lights, year-round.

When to Shoot

Time of Year Arrive Sun Sets Crowds
June–August 6:30 pm ~8:50 pm Heavy after 7 pm — book Tuesday/Wednesday
Sept–Oct 5:30 pm ~6:45 pm Moderate, manageable
Nov–Feb 3:30 pm ~4:45 pm Light — best privacy of year
March–May 5:00 pm ~7:45 pm Light to moderate

Saturday and Sunday evenings May–September are the worst for crowds. Tourists, runners, food-truck traffic. Weekday evenings are dramatically calmer.

Parking

  • Free 2-hour street parking along Main St SE (north side of river) — arrive 30 min early to grab.
  • Mill City Museum lot ($8–$12 evenings)
  • Aria parking lot is private — don't.

What to Wear at Stone Arch

The limestone is warm-toned; your outfits should harmonize:

  • Works great: cream, camel, sage, dusty pink, terracotta, deep navy
  • Avoid: bright white (blows out), neon, head-to-toe black on the bridge itself (disappears against shadows)

What I Bring

  • Reflector (managing harsh midday)
  • Off-camera flash (after sunset, with a permit if I need stands)
  • Knee pads (the cobblestone is rough on dresses for low-angle shots)

The Honest Downside

Stone Arch is iconic for a reason — but every Twin Cities photographer shoots here. If you want a session that doesn't look like everyone else's engagement album, we should combine 30 min at Stone Arch with 30 min at a less-shot location: Boom Island, Eastman Nature Center, Theodore Wirth Quaking Bog, or the Tangletown gardens.

Most of my couples pick a combo. The Stone Arch shots end up the save-the-date; the unique-location shots end up framed in the house.
