What to Wear for Engagement Photos in Minneapolis (2026 Guide)

I've photographed 200+ engagement sessions across the Twin Cities since 2018. The single question I get most: "What do we wear?"

Here's the system I send every couple — by season, by location, with the formulas that actually photograph well.

The 3 Rules That Override Everything

  1. Coordinate, don't match. Pick a 3-color palette (e.g. cream + sage + camel). One partner anchors a print, the other wears solid.
  2. Avoid bright white. It blows out next to skin tones and steals attention from your faces. Cream, ivory, oatmeal — yes. Bleached white tee — no.
  3. No logos, no slogans, no matching denim-on-denim. They date the photos instantly.

Summer (June – August) at Stone Arch Bridge or Lake Harriet

  • Her: flowy midi dress in cream, sage, dusty pink, or terracotta. Bare shoulders are great — Minneapolis golden hour is forgiving.
  • Him: linen button-down (rolled sleeves), khaki or olive chinos, leather sneakers or loafers.
  • Avoid: all-black (heat + sweat shows), heavy fabrics, anything strappy that leaves tan lines.

Fall (mid-Sept – mid-Oct) at Theodore Wirth or Lake of the Isles

This is Minneapolis's best engagement-photo window. Lean into it:

  • Her: rust, mustard, deep forest green, burgundy. Long sweater + boots, or a flowy maxi with a denim jacket for the in-between temps.
  • Him: corduroy, flannel layered over a henley, dark jeans, leather boots.
  • Bonus: a chunky knit blanket prop reads "fall" without being cheesy.

Winter (Nov – March) at Como Conservatory or North Loop

Long coats photograph beautifully. Don't hide them — feature them.

  • Her: long camel or wool coat over a simple dress, knee-high boots, leather gloves. Or all-white winter goddess look (this is the one exception to the no-white rule — snow eats the contrast).
  • Him: wool peacoat, charcoal trousers, leather Chelsea boots.
  • Survival tip: hand warmers in pockets, hot drinks staged as props, sessions kept to 45 minutes, warm-up break at a coffee shop nearby.

Spring (April – May) at the Mill District or Boom Island

The trickiest season — green hasn't arrived, snow has melted. Outfits do the work.

  • Her: soft pastels (blush, sage, butter yellow), or trench coat over a slip dress.
  • Him: light grey blazer over white tee, navy chinos.

North Loop Year-Round (Industrial / Moody Vibe)

Lean into the architecture. Black, charcoal, oxblood, deep camel. Leather jacket on him, structured dress on her. This is the only location where head-to-toe black photographs well.

Outfit Change Strategy

I include two outfits in every 60-minute session. The formula that works best:

  1. Outfit 1: dressier, more romantic (the one for the save-the-date)
  2. Outfit 2: casual, fun, more "you" (jeans + sweater, sneakers)

Bring outfit 2 in a tote — we'll change at the car between locations.

What I Bring So You Don't Have To

  • Lint roller
  • Hand warmers (Oct–March)
  • Bobby pins, hair ties
  • Tissues
