When to Schedule Newborn Photos in Minneapolis (Week-by-Week Guide)

Short answer: book during pregnancy (around 30 weeks) and aim to shoot between days 5 and 14 for posed sessions, or anytime in the first 8 weeks for lifestyle/in-home.

Here's why — and how to plan it without stress.

Why Days 5–14 for "Posed" Newborn Sessions

In the first two weeks, babies still curl into the womb shape that makes those iconic posed shots work. They sleep deeply, can be gently positioned, and haven't developed reflexes that make them startle.

After day 14, three things change:

  1. Sleep gets lighter. Babies wake during repositioning.
  2. Acne and skin redness peak around weeks 2–4.
  3. Stretch reflex returns. No more peaceful curl.

What About Lifestyle Sessions?

If you're skipping the wrapped-in-a-basket look and want in-home documentary photos — feeding, snuggling, big sibling meeting baby — any time in the first 8 weeks works beautifully. Babies are more alert at 4–6 weeks, which makes for great eye-contact shots.

How to Book Without Knowing the Birth Date

Every Minneapolis newborn photographer I respect uses a "due-date hold" system. Here's mine:

  1. Around 30 weeks pregnant, you reach out with your due date.
  2. I block off a 3-week window starting at your due date.
  3. When baby arrives, you text me from the hospital.
  4. We confirm the actual session date within the first 72 hours of being home.

This way you never miss the window because you can't predict the exact day.

What I Bring (Studio Sessions)

  • Heated room (80°F — non-negotiable for safety)
  • 8+ wraps, hats, bonnets
  • Neutral basket, bed, and floor setups
  • White noise machine
  • Sound-deadening backdrops

You bring: baby, two outfits for mom/dad if you want family shots, and any heirloom items (grandma's quilt, name sign, etc.).

What If We Miss the Window?

It happens — NICU stays, late delivery, sick parents. Two backup plans:

  1. Lifestyle catch-up at 4–6 weeks in your home (skip the curled poses, lean into snuggles).
  2. Sitter milestone at 6 months — propped up, smiling. Different feel, equally beautiful.

Minneapolis-Specific Timing Tips

  • Polar vortex weeks (Jan–early Feb): I default to in-home. Driving a newborn at -20°F isn't worth it.
  • Summer due dates: Studio is climate-controlled; outdoor newborn sessions in MN aren't really a thing because of mosquitoes + UV exposure on baby skin.
  • Mall of America moms-to-be: I serve Bloomington, Edina, Eden Prairie, Lakeville with no travel fees.
