When to Schedule Maternity Photos in Minnesota (By Season)
The most common question I get from expecting parents is simply when to book. The short answer is between 28 and 34 weeks. The longer answer depends on which Minnesota month you land in, because that decides whether an outdoor session is realistic at all.
The ideal window: 28 to 34 weeks
Before 28 weeks the bump often does not read clearly in photographs, especially in a first pregnancy. After 34 weeks most people are less comfortable standing and walking for an hour, and there is a real risk of an early arrival. Weeks 30 to 32 are my sweet spot.
Adjust earlier if you are carrying multiples. Twins typically photograph best around 26 to 30 weeks, since the third trimester moves faster and gets uncomfortable sooner.
Working backward from your due date and the Minnesota calendar
Once you know your 30-week date, check what month that falls in. This is the part people skip.
Due in April or May → session in February or March
You are in the coldest, grayest stretch of the year. Plan an indoor studio or in-home session. In-home is genuinely my favorite for this: the nursery you have been setting up is the most meaningful backdrop available, and window light in a Minnesota winter is soft and beautiful.
Due in June or July → session in April or May
Green arrives in the metro around the first week of May. An April session will still look brown outdoors, so either go indoors or wait to the back edge of the window. Mid-May onward is lovely.
Due in August or September → session in June or July
The best outdoor conditions of the year. Golden hour runs late, so an 8:00 PM start in June is normal. Bring bug spray if we are near water.
Due in October or November → session in August or September
September is the single best maternity month in Minnesota: comfortable temperatures, warm light, and early fall color in the last two weeks. This window books out first.
Due in December through March → session in October through January
October gives you peak color. November and December mean an indoor session or a very short outdoor one, and honestly a snowy session with a long coat and a warm interior to retreat to produces striking images.
Should maternity photos be indoors or outdoors in Minnesota?
Between May and October, outdoors at golden hour. Between November and April, in-home or studio, with an optional 10-minute outdoor set if there is fresh snow and you are willing. Forcing an outdoor session in a Minnesota March produces a brown, windy gallery nobody enjoys.
What to wear
Fitted over flowing, at least for part of the session. Loose fabric hides the bump, which defeats the point. Solid colors in a coordinated palette, long sleeves and long lines to elongate, and one outfit you feel unmistakably good in. Bring a second option: many people want one fitted dress and one relaxed, at-home look. Partners and older children should coordinate in the same tonal family rather than matching exactly.
Locations that work well in the Twin Cities
Minnehaha Park, the Lyndale Park Rose Gardens, Como Park, Theodore Wirth's prairie areas, the Mississippi River bluffs, and the St. Croix Valley near Stillwater all photograph well and have short walks from parking, which matters at 32 weeks. In-home sessions in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and the surrounding suburbs are equally strong and require no walking at all.
Pairing maternity with newborn
Book both at the same time. Newborn sessions happen in the first two weeks of life and cannot be scheduled precisely, so photographers hold approximate windows around your due date. Reserving both together means the newborn slot exists when the baby arrives, and many photographers, myself included, price the pair together.
Frequently asked questions
How many weeks pregnant should you be for maternity photos?
Between 28 and 34 weeks, with 30 to 32 being ideal for most first pregnancies. Schedule earlier, around 26 to 30 weeks, if you are expecting twins.
When should I book a maternity photographer?
By the end of the first or early second trimester. Popular September and October dates in Minnesota fill months ahead, and booking early lets you reserve a matching newborn window at the same time.
What is the best month for outdoor maternity photos in Minnesota?
September, followed by June and early October. The metro is reliably green from mid-May through mid-October, and outside that window an indoor or in-home session produces better results.
What should you wear for maternity photos?
Fitted clothing that shows the shape of the bump, solid coordinated colors, and one outfit you already feel confident in. Bring a second look so the gallery has variety, and have partners and children wear the same color family rather than identical outfits.
See recent sessions on the maternity photography page, or send me your due date and I will tell you which weeks to target.
