Twin Cities Family Photographer

Most families don't need more posing — they need someone who can keep three kids moving in the same direction while the light is good. My sessions run on prompts rather than poses. I get the one everyone-looking-at-the-camera photo the grandparents want, usually inside the first ten minutes, and then we walk, play, and let the rest of the session look the way your family actually looks.

Kids set the pace. The four-year-old who refuses to smile on command will happily sprint down a path at Lake Harriet or throw leaves at Battle Creek, and those are the frames that end up printed large. I shoot fast and quietly, and I won't stop a good moment to fix a collar.

Extended-family and multi-generation sessions work differently: I photograph groups up to 25 people, and I send a formals shot list before the session so every combination is covered and nobody gets missed. We knock out the big groupings early while everyone is fresh, then break into smaller family sets.

Fall is the crunch. Peak color in the Twin Cities runs late September through mid-October, and those few weekends are the first thing on my calendar to fill each year. If you want fall photos for holiday cards, reach out in summer, not October.

Spring and summer are easier. May brings the lilacs, and June through August is about golden hour — the last stretch of light before sunset, when everything goes warm and soft. In midsummer that means a start time later than most bedtime schedules love. It's worth it, and naps help.

Winter works better than people expect. Snow at Minnehaha Falls is genuinely beautiful, sessions just run shorter, and the Como Conservatory keeps everything warm and green when it's too cold to be outside. Early sunsets also put golden hour at a perfectly civilized afternoon hour.

Full family sessions start at $425. Fall mini-sessions — 20 minutes at Battle Creek or the Sculpture Garden, September and October only — start at $325. There's no travel fee anywhere in the Twin Cities metro, so Minneapolis, St. Paul, and every suburb in between cost the same.

There are plenty of good family photographers in the Twin Cities, and the honest differences come down to style, not quality tiers. Studio photographers give you controlled light and formal portraits; outdoor documentary photographers — my end of the spectrum — give you movement, real expressions, and the metro's parks as the backdrop. Look at full galleries rather than highlight reels, and pick the photographer whose ordinary frames you'd still hang on a wall.

Then ask the practical questions: what's included at the base price, whether your suburb adds a travel fee, and how long the gallery takes. If your kids are young, ask how the photographer handles a mid-session meltdown — the answer tells you more than any portfolio does.
