Northfield Wedding Venues: Colleges, Barns, Downtown

Northfield gives you three kinds of wedding in one small town: two historic downtown rooms, two working farms, and two college campuses that both publish their wedding rates in full. Add the city's own park shelters and you have more genuinely bookable options here than in towns twice the size.
Everything below is taken from the venue's own website or the city's and county's own pages. Northfield is about 40 miles south of Minneapolis, close enough that most Twin Cities vendors treat it as a normal Saturday, and far enough that you should ask each one about travel before you assume. If you want the wider picture first, my Twin Cities venue guide sets the context.
Which Northfield venues can I confirm host weddings?
Four in the private sector, plus the two colleges in the next section. They split cleanly into downtown rooms and farms, and the decision between those two is really a decision about how much of the day happens outdoors.
The Grand Event Center
At 316 Washington Street, The Grand publishes an unusually detailed package list: a historic theatre with high ceilings for ceremonies, a banquet hall for receptions of up to 250, a wedding coordinator, an entree tasting, venue access from 8am on the day, white linens, napkins and skirted tables, china, flatware and glassware, coffee service, sodas and water carafes, and glass vases and votives. Catering is in-house with custom menus, the bar is full-service with signature cocktails and no bar minimums, and every reception is a plated dinner rather than a buffet. Rates sit in a separate fees, terms and conditions document rather than on the page, so ask for it early.
Armory Square Event Center
Armory Square occupies the 1915 National Guard armory at 519 Division Street South. Its own site describes a main event space seating over 300, a smaller casual room called The Low Down, and a tiki bar space called The AWOL Bar for small groups, plus a licensed commercial kitchen available to rent. Wedding pricing is distributed as a downloadable pamphlet rather than published on the page. A big-windowed drill hall is a photographer's friend; ask which windows face which way and what the room looks like at the hour your ceremony starts.
Goodtree Farmstead
Goodtree describes itself as a farm wedding and event venue in rural Northfield, on 14 acres of a former dairy farm with a pond and a creek, woods around it and farmland beyond. The red barn dates to 1897 and has soaring ceilings and pegged beams. Its own pages do not publish a street address, capacity, catering rules or rates, so all four are questions for the tour rather than facts I will repeat from elsewhere. My Minnesota barn wedding venue guide covers what to check in a building of this age, from power supply to where people go when it rains.
Red Barn Farm
Red Barn Farm is at 10063 110th Street East and publishes a season rather than a rate card: wedding and pizza season runs May to October. That single line tells you a lot. A May-to-October venue is an outdoor venue with a building attached, so your rain plan, your guest comfort plan and your portrait plan all need to work outside first. Capacity, catering and pricing are not published, so ask.
Can you get married at St. Olaf or Carleton?
Yes, at both, and neither restricts it to alumni, though both charge alumni less. This is the part of Northfield that people do not realise is available to them.
St. Olaf College, at 1520 St. Olaf Avenue, publishes two tiers of wedding package. Ole packages, for alumni, run $3,000 to $4,500 for a full package and $1,800 for ceremony only. Black and Gold packages, for everyone else, run $3,500 to $5,000 full and $2,200 for ceremony only. Packages cover Boe Chapel, two private getting-ready suites, the Kings Dining Room for cocktails and ballrooms for dinner and dancing, and they are banded by guest count from under 75 up to 350. Catering is exclusively through Bon Appetit. Audio-visual recording add-ons start at $500.
Carleton College, at One North College Street, publishes rental fees for Skinner Memorial Chapel of $1,700 for Carleton community members and non-profits and $2,200 for everyone else, with the chapel free for Carleton alumni. A $150 deposit secures the date, refundable with three months' notice, with the balance due a month before. The chapel seats 950, which makes it the largest ceremony room in Rice County by a distance. Reception options include the Weitz Center for Creativity, Severance Great Hall, the Cowling Arboretum and the Alumni Guest House grounds, at separate fees from $500 to $1,700, and Bon Appetit handles all campus catering and alcohol while you book your other vendors yourself.
Two chapels this size come with rules about where a photographer may stand, what may be attached to the pews and whether flash is permitted during the ceremony. Those are set by the chapel, not by your photographer, so ask for them in writing at the booking stage; I have written about how these policies usually read in my guide to church wedding photo rules in the Twin Cities.
What does the City of Northfield rent, and what are the rules?
Northfield is one of the few cities that will let you hold a wedding in a park for nothing. Its park event reservation page states plainly that there is no fee to reserve a non-shelter park for a private event such as a wedding, through a reservation form. The rules attached are short and firm: beer in cans only, no glass containers anywhere in city parks, no other alcohol, everything finished by 10pm, and you bring the bin bags and handle all of the cleanup.
If you want a roof, the park shelter page lists Babcock, Oddfellows, Riverside Lions, Sechler and Spring Creek parks at $45 for one to four hours and $65 for a full day, except Babcock, which is full-day only at $85. Restroom keys are available for groups over 25, picked up at the Street Department up to 48 hours before and returned within 72 hours afterwards; Spring Creek has no restrooms at all. For a ceremony of 40 people with dinner somewhere else afterwards, that is the cheapest legitimate wedding venue within an hour of the Twin Cities. It pairs well with the thinking in my guide to small wedding venues in Minnesota.
How do you get a marriage licence in Rice County?
Northfield is in Rice County, and the Recorder's Office is in the Government Services Building at 320 Third Street NW in Faribault, about 20 minutes south. The county's page says both applicants must come in person and need not be Rice County residents. The fee is $125 without a premarital educator's statement, or $50 with the original statement. They take cash, cheque, money order, Mastercard, Visa, American Express and the main digital wallets, with a $2.50 convenience fee on digital payments. The licence must be used within six months or it becomes void, and it is valid anywhere in Minnesota.
Those amounts are set by Minnesota Statutes section 517.08, which fixes the $125 fee, the $50 rate for couples who complete at least 12 hours of premarital education, and the six-month validity. Rice County also performs civil ceremonies at no charge, scheduled at 4pm in a courtroom on most Tuesdays at the courthouse at 218 Third Street NW in Faribault, with your licence, legal identification and two witnesses aged 16 or over. If you want the whole process in one place, my Minnesota marriage licence guide walks through it step by step.
What should you plan for light and portraits in Northfield?
Downtown Northfield runs along the Cannon River, and the bridge, the dam and the brick storefronts on Division Street are the town's obvious portrait backdrop. They are also public, busy on a Saturday, and photograph best in the hour after the sun drops below the buildings rather than in the middle of the day. If your ceremony is downtown, protect 20 minutes in the evening rather than trying to do everything between the ceremony and dinner.
On the campuses the problem reverses. Boe Chapel and Skinner Chapel are both tall, dim stone-and-wood interiors with beautiful windows, which means the contrast between a sunlit window and a shaded aisle is extreme at midday and much kinder later. On the farms, the barn interior is dark and the field outside is not, so the transition between the two is where the schedule usually breaks. In all three cases the fix is the same: decide the portrait window first and build the rest of the day around it using something like my Minnesota wedding day timeline template. Autumn is the busiest season down here, and my notes on fall wedding venues in Minnesota explain what the colour does to your schedule.
One last practical point. I offer free travel within 40 miles of the Twin Cities, and Northfield sits right at the edge of that, but not every vendor draws the line in the same place. Ask your florist, your band and your cake maker about a delivery charge before you sign, not after. If you want a second opinion on a specific date and venue, send me the details; you can also see how I work as a Northfield wedding photographer or read more about me as a Minnesota wedding photographer.
Frequently asked questions
Do you have to be an alumnus to marry at St. Olaf or Carleton?
No. St. Olaf publishes a Black and Gold package for non-alumni alongside its Ole package for graduates, and Carleton publishes a Skinner Memorial Chapel rental rate for people with no Carleton connection. Both charge alumni less, and at Carleton the chapel itself is free for alumni, so it is worth checking whether anyone in either family qualifies.
Can you hold a wedding in a Northfield city park for free?
Yes, for a non-shelter park. The city states there is no fee to reserve one for a private event such as a wedding, though you still submit a reservation form. The city's shelter page lists $45 for one to four hours or $65 for a full day. Beer in cans only, no glass anywhere, everything finished by 10pm, and you handle all cleanup.
Which Northfield venue holds the most guests?
Skinner Memorial Chapel at Carleton, which seats 950, though that is a ceremony space rather than a reception room. Armory Square seats over 300 in its main hall, St. Olaf's packages go up to 350 and The Grand handles up to 250. Goodtree Farmstead and Red Barn Farm do not publish capacities on their own sites.
How far is Northfield from Minneapolis for wedding guests?
Roughly 40 miles south, which is an easy drive outside rush hour but long enough that out-of-town guests will want a hotel rather than a late drive home. Block rooms early: Northfield is a small town with two colleges, so graduation, reunion and family weekends absorb a lot of rooms without much notice.
Is a Rice County licence required to marry in Northfield?
No. A Minnesota marriage licence is valid anywhere in the state whichever county issues it, and Rice County notes that applicants do not have to be county residents. Apply wherever is convenient, allow for the fact that both of you must appear in person, and remember the licence expires six months after it is issued.
