Moving a Minnesota wedding off Saturday saves real money at the venue and almost nothing anywhere else. Twin Cities venues publish rate cards with a Saturday price, a Friday and Sunday price, and a much lower Monday-to-Thursday price. Most other vendors quote one rate for the whole week.
That asymmetry is the whole story, and it is why I want couples to check the published numbers rather than guess at a percentage. Below are the rates three Twin Cities venues actually publish for each day of the week, which parts of a budget move with them, how a Sunday behaves when a federal holiday sits behind it, and what you trade in guest attendance. I have not invented a single figure; every number here is quoted from a venue's own page or a government source, and linked in the same paragraph.
What does moving off a Saturday actually save?
At the venue, a lot. At the reception venue Day Block Event Center in Minneapolis, the published evening rate for the entire floor is $5,000 on a Saturday, $4,000 on a Friday, $3,500 on a Sunday and $2,000 Monday through Thursday, per the Day Block Event Center venue pricing page. That is a $3,000 spread between the best and worst day, for the same room.
Everywhere else in the budget, the day of week usually does nothing at all. Catering is priced per head. Rentals are priced per item. Florals are priced by what is in them. Photography — mine included — is priced by coverage and deliverables, which do not change because it is a Thursday. So the honest way to think about a weekday wedding is as a venue decision that also changes your guest list behaviour, not as a general saving across the whole budget.
What three Twin Cities venues publish, day by day
These are the current published rates. Read them as a pattern rather than as quotes — call the venue for your own date, because rate cards change and most of these exclude catering, alcohol, tax and staffing.
- Landmark Center, Saint Paul. The Musser Cortile is published at $6,000 for a Saturday evening, $4,500 for a Friday or Sunday evening, $2,000 for a Monday-to-Thursday evening and $1,000 Monday to Thursday before 5 p.m. A cortile ceremony plus reception adds $1,500 for the changeover crew, and building exclusivity after 4 p.m. adds $1,000. Courtrooms are $100 an hour Monday to Friday until 5 p.m. and $250 an hour evenings and weekends, with a two-hour minimum. All from Landmark Center: Rental rates.
- Day Block Event Center, Minneapolis. Entire floor at $5,000 Saturday, $4,000 Friday, $3,500 Sunday, $2,000 Monday to Thursday evening. Monday-to-Thursday daytime use of the full floor, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., is published at $2,500. See Day Block Event Center: Venue pricing.
- FIVE Event Center, Minneapolis. Monday to Thursday is published at $225 an hour with a four-hour minimum. Weekend rates are also split by season: April to October is $4,500 Saturday, $3,500 Friday and $2,500 Sunday, while November to March is $3,000 Saturday, $2,000 Friday and $1,500 Sunday. A ceremony adds $1,000 and security is $250 for up to four hours. Figures from FIVE Event Center: Pricing.
Two things jump out. First, the Saturday-to-Friday step at these venues is a four-figure one, while the step down to Monday-to-Thursday is larger again. Second, at FIVE the season lever is roughly as powerful as the day lever — a winter Saturday is published below a spring Friday. If budget is the binding constraint, stacking the two moves does more than either alone. My guide to budget-friendly Twin Cities wedding venues and the list of small Minneapolis wedding venues are both good places to compare rate cards side by side.
Which vendors move on price, and which do not
Ask, but do not assume. In my experience of quoting Twin Cities weddings, the pattern looks like this:
- Venues: almost always day-dependent, and they publish it.
- Bands and DJs: sometimes, because a Friday is easier to staff than a Saturday.
- Caterers: rarely on the food, occasionally on staffing minimums or a lower food-and-beverage floor.
- Photographers, florists, planners, hair and makeup: usually one rate all week. The work is the same length and the same difficulty.
Permits are a useful tie-breaker, because public-sector rate cards are transparent. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board publishes wedding and ceremony permits in one-, three- and six-hour increments — $525 plus tax for three hours, $100 plus tax for a one-hour low-impact permit — with the published rate stated by duration rather than by day of week, and applications taken up to 12 months out, per the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board wedding and ceremony permits page. A park ceremony costs the same on a Tuesday as on a Saturday.
My own collections work the same way: they are priced by hours of coverage and what you receive, not by which day the wedding lands on. You can see what each includes on the services page, and I have written more about how local photography pricing is built in my Minnesota wedding photography pricing guide.
Sunday weddings and the holiday-weekend exception
A Sunday wedding has one problem — guests have work on Monday — and one clean solution, which is to put it on the Sunday of a three-day weekend. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management states that when a holiday falls on a Sunday, most federal employees observe the following Monday, and when it falls on a Saturday, the preceding Friday is treated as the holiday, per the U.S. Office of Personnel Management federal holidays page. Several federal holidays are fixed to a Monday by statute — Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day — which makes the Sunday before each of them the most attendable non-Saturday date on the calendar.
The catch is that those Sundays are not cheap for everyone. Venues know exactly what a Memorial Day Sunday is worth, and hotels raise rates on holiday weekends. Check the published rate for that specific date rather than assuming the general Sunday price applies.
What a weekday costs you in guest attendance
This is the part couples underweight. A Saturday wedding asks guests for a day. A Friday afternoon wedding asks them for a half-day of paid leave plus travel, and a Tuesday wedding asks for a whole day. Out-of-town guests need two nights either way, so the travel burden goes up, not down.
Practical mitigations that work: a later Friday start so people can come straight from work, a clear note on the invitation that the ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. and not 4:00 p.m., a block of rooms near the venue, and honesty with yourself about which guests genuinely cannot take leave. Shift workers, teachers, healthcare staff and anyone hourly are the people most affected, and they are often the people you most want there.
One administrative note: your marriage licence has nothing to do with the wedding day, but it does have weekday hours. Hennepin County publishes a $125 licence fee, reduced to $50 with 12 hours of premarital education, valid for six months, with service centres open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and appointments recommended — see Hennepin County: Marriage licence. Handle it well before the week of the wedding, whichever day you marry on.
How the day stacks with the Minnesota season
Day of week and month are two separate levers, and in Minnesota the month is the stronger one. FIVE Event Center's own November-to-March Saturday rate of $3,000 sits below its April-to-October Friday rate of $3,500, per FIVE Event Center: Pricing — meaning a couple who wanted Saturday could keep it by moving the month instead of the day.
If both levers are available to you, pull the month first and the day second. A winter Saturday keeps your guest attendance intact, which a Wednesday in July does not. If you are weighing dates, my notes on when to book a wedding photographer in Minnesota cover how far ahead each part of the calendar goes, and the wedding venue guides break the metro down by area.
Questions to ask before you commit to a Friday
- What is the published rate for my exact date, and does a holiday weekend change it?
- What time can we get into the building? Weekday access is often later because the venue has daytime business.
- Is the food-and-beverage minimum different on this day, and is it stated in the contract?
- Does the venue have another event in the building that day, and can we buy exclusivity?
- Do the vendors we want already hold a Saturday that weekend, which would make them unavailable on the Friday for setup?
- How many of our must-attend guests genuinely cannot take the day off?
If the answers land well, a Friday or Sunday is one of the few decisions in wedding planning that saves four figures without making the day smaller. If you want to talk through a specific date, get in touch — and if Landmark Center is on your list, I have a page on photographing weddings at Landmark Center. You can also see how the full days come together on my wedding photography page.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Friday wedding cheaper than a Saturday in the Twin Cities?
At the venue, usually yes. Day Block publishes $4,000 for a Friday against $5,000 for a Saturday, and Landmark Center publishes $4,500 against $6,000 for the Musser Cortile. Outside the venue line, most vendors quote the same rate all week, so treat the saving as a venue saving rather than a whole-budget one.
Do photographers charge less for a weekday wedding?
Generally no, and I do not. An eight-hour Thursday is the same eight hours of work, the same editing afterwards and the same equipment as an eight-hour Saturday. Where a weekday can help is availability: popular photographers book Saturdays first, so a Friday or Sunday date may open up someone whose Saturdays are already gone for your year.
What is the best weekday for a wedding?
Friday evening, by a wide margin, because guests can come straight from work and only lose part of a day. Sunday afternoon is second, and much stronger when the Monday is a federal holiday. Monday through Thursday saves the most at the venue but costs the most in attendance, so it suits small guest lists and local families.
Will guests actually skip a weekday wedding?
Some will, and they will be the ones with the least control over their schedules. Expect more regrets from hourly workers, parents of school-age children and out-of-town guests. You can soften it with a later start time, a hotel block and plenty of notice, but plan your numbers on the assumption that a Tuesday reduces attendance rather than hoping it will not.
Does a holiday weekend make a Sunday wedding work?
It helps a great deal, because most federal employees observe the Monday when a holiday falls on a Sunday, and several federal holidays are fixed to Mondays outright. The trade is cost: venues and hotels price holiday weekends accordingly, so confirm the published rate for that exact date before assuming the ordinary Sunday figure applies.
