Minnesota North Shore Wedding & Elopement Photography Guide (2026)

The North Shore is the most requested destination in my Minnesota elopement inbox — Lake Superior cliffs, boreal forest, waterfalls, and a lighthouse-and-sea aesthetic that doesn't exist anywhere else in the Upper Midwest. Here's what I've learned from photographing weddings and elopements on the shore between Duluth and Grand Portage.

The North Shore locations couples actually book

Split Rock Lighthouse State Park

The most iconic Minnesota elopement backdrop. Ceremonies allowed on the pebble beach below the lighthouse with a $50 Minnesota State Parks special event permit. The overlook and lighthouse grounds are for portraits only (no ceremonies). Permit lead time: 30 days.

Tettegouche State Park

Shovel Point cliffs, Palisade Head (technically Tettegouche), Baptism River High Falls, and the Lake Superior overlook. Same $50 special event permit. My personal favorite because you get five distinct backdrops in a 2-mile radius.

Gooseberry Falls State Park

Middle Falls and Upper Falls both allow ceremonies with permit. Best for spring shoulder-season elopements when snowmelt makes the falls thunder.

Palisade Head

The 300-foot rhyolite cliff south of Silver Bay. Free access, no permit for small handheld portraits. Not appropriate for large groups (parking + safety).

Grand Marais Harbor & Artist's Point

The northernmost tip of the developed North Shore. Lighthouse, harbor, Lake Superior boulders. No permit for a small elopement on Artist's Point.

Bluefin Bay / Lutsen / Grand Superior Lodge

Private resort venues — full weddings up to 150 guests, on-site lodging, no permit required. Where I photograph most of my full-scale North Shore weddings.

Minnesota State Parks special event permits

Any wedding ceremony (regardless of size) in a Minnesota State Park requires a Special Use Permit: $50, applied online at the DNR site, 30+ days lead time. Portraits alone with a small group generally don't require the permit, but rangers can and do ask. A state park vehicle pass ($7 daily or $35 annual) is required for every car entering.

Weather and season planning

June–August: Warm on the lake, buggy in the woods (bring DEET), fog possible any morning. September–early October: Peak fall color, my most-booked North Shore months, needs a 12-month lead. Late October–April: Ice caves, frozen falls, and stunning winter conditions, but Highway 61 can close for storms — always have a Plan B. May: Waterfalls at peak flow, quietest month for permits.

Travel logistics from the Twin Cities

3.5 hours Minneapolis to Split Rock. 4.5 hours to Grand Marais. I include travel in my North Shore collections (2-night lodging + drive) rather than as a per-hour fee — see the North Shore elopement photographer page for pricing. Most couples fly guests into MSP and shuttle to a Lutsen lodge for the weekend.

My most-booked North Shore elopement package

Split Rock ceremony (4pm, permit filed 60 days out) → Palisade Head portraits (5:30) → Tettegouche cliffside golden hour (6:45) → dinner at Coho Café in Tofte. Full 6-hour coverage plus a next-morning breakfast portrait session at Gooseberry Falls. Runs $3,800 all-in including travel.

Not eloping on the North Shore itself? See the Minnesota elopement photographer page for statewide coverage, or the Minnesota wedding photographer hub for full weddings anywhere in the state.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit to get married in a Minnesota State Park?

Yes — every wedding ceremony in a Minnesota State Park, including North Shore parks like Split Rock, Tettegouche, and Gooseberry Falls, requires a $50 Special Use Permit filed at least 30 days in advance through the Minnesota DNR.

When is the best time for a North Shore wedding?

Late September through mid-October delivers peak fall color, stable weather, and the North Shore's most-photographed lighting conditions. Late June through early August is a close second for warm-water shoreline weddings.

Can I have a wedding at Split Rock Lighthouse?

Yes — ceremonies are permitted on the pebble beach below Split Rock Lighthouse with a Minnesota DNR Special Use Permit. The lighthouse grounds and overlook are limited to portraits and are not available for ceremonies.

How far in advance should I book a North Shore wedding photographer?

12–18 months for September and October weekends, which are the most competitive dates on the North Shore. Elopements outside peak color often book 3–6 months out.

What's the cost of a North Shore elopement in 2026?

Typical 2026 all-in North Shore elopement (photographer, officiant, permits, 2-night lodging, small dinner): $4,500–$8,500. Full weddings at Lutsen or Bluefin Bay resorts start around $18,000 for 40 guests.
