Afton State Park Engagement Photographer

Afton is elevation. Most Twin Cities engagement locations are flat — a lake, a street, a park. Afton puts you 200 feet above the St. Croix on open prairie, with the river valley and the Wisconsin bluffs stretching away behind you. It reads like a destination session, and it's thirty minutes from downtown St. Paul.

It's a hiking park, and the best spots are a real walk from the lot. Plan for comfortable shoes to the location and a change into whatever you want to be photographed in — that's normal here.

Afton is a Minnesota state park, so a state park vehicle permit is required to enter. Professional photography in state parks follows the DNR's rules; I confirm the current requirement when we book and handle whatever is needed. Either way it's built into the session, not a surprise at the gate.

Late September through mid-October is the window: prairie gone gold, maples turning in the ravines, and a sunset that lights the whole valley. In summer, come for the last two hours of light — the prairie is harsh at midday and glowing at seven.
