Lake Harriet Engagement Photographer

Lake Harriet gives you three sessions in one: formal gardens, a lakeshore with a real horizon, and the bandshell's architecture. The Rose Garden peaks from late June through September; the Peace Garden holds structure and colour longer; the boardwalk and docks work all year, including on ice.

The light is the reason to plan carefully here. The east shore faces west, so the last hour before sunset puts the sun over the water and behind you — that is where the glowing, backlit lake photos come from. Start on the gardens side while the sun is still high, and end on the shore.

Lake Harriet is a Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board park, and professional photography there needs a Park Board permit. It's straightforward and I apply for it — you never have to think about it. Summer weekends are busy from noon to dusk with concerts at the bandshell and the walking path at full capacity. Weekday evenings are noticeably calmer, and Rose Garden mornings before 9 AM are nearly private.
