Gale Woods Farm is a working educational farm run by Three Rivers Park District in Minnetrista, and its pavilion rents for weddings from spring into fall. Expect required full-service catering, a zero-waste policy and a drive of about 45 minutes from downtown Minneapolis.
This guide sticks to what the park district publishes, flags what it leaves out, and covers what to check so your timeline and photos work at a venue that is also a public park with animals, trails and visitors.
Is Gale Woods Farm still hosting weddings?
Yes. The Gale Woods Farm Pavilion page lists current rental rates, weekday tours by appointment and 2026 open house dates, and the district's featured venues page pitches the pavilion as a classic country wedding setting with an outdoor ceremony site and a bonfire pit.
The farm is at 7210 County Road 110 West in Minnetrista. Three Rivers describes it as a real working farm that teaches agriculture, food production and land stewardship, with chickens, cattle, sheep, pigs and guard dogs on site. The pavilion's large doors roll open to the pasture, the gardens and Whaletail Lake.
What does the pavilion include, and what does it cost?
The pavilion is a fully enclosed building, heated but not air conditioned, with an outdoor patio and an outdoor ceremony option. According to the rental page, the rental includes tables and chairs, modern restrooms, a sound system with wireless microphones, two refrigerators and a chest freezer, free onsite parking, an on-duty event assistant and the bonfire pit with firewood.
When I checked the pavilion rates in September 2026, a full day from 10 AM to midnight was $1,350 Monday through Thursday and $2,300 Friday through Sunday and holidays, and a weekday partial day of eight hours or fewer was $1,100. Add a $600 facility rental deposit and a $300 security fee for any reservation after 8 PM. Payment is due in full at booking.
Ceremony extras are priced separately on the same page: chairs at $3.50 each and an outdoor sound system at $164, tax included. Chairs for 120 guests add $420, so budget for them early.
Which months can you book?
Three Rivers publishes two answers. The pavilion page lists April through November, while the Gale Woods Farm page says the pavilion is available for large groups from the last Friday in April through the last Sunday in October. For a date near either end, get availability confirmed in writing before you pay.
How many guests fit?
None of the district pages I reviewed publish a guest capacity for the pavilion, patio or ceremony site. Ask for seated, standing and ceremony numbers before you finalize your guest list.
Catering, bar and zero-waste rules
The district's catering page says caterers at its featured venues must provide all food and beverage except dessert, bring it, stay to serve it, clear tables, manage trash and stay until service ends. Drop-off catering is not allowed, and Three Rivers charges each caterer a 15% usage fee, so ask whether your quote includes it.
Settle two details early. The district's rental spaces page says an approved caterer or food truck is required at the Gale Woods Pavilion, while the pavilion page requires full-service catering, so confirm whether a food truck qualifies. And because the pavilion page does not spell out alcohol rules, ask how bar service works; the approved caterer list marks which caterers offer it.
The pavilion is a zero-waste facility. The zero-waste guidelines allow washable dinnerware, glassware and linens, plus compostable products with the BPI certification logo. Single-serving plastic bottles and food in disposable plastic or Styrofoam containers are not allowed, and breaking the rules can cost you the damage deposit. Share them with your caterer, baker and bartender.
Getting there: location, parking and drive time
Gale Woods Farm is about 25 miles west of downtown Minneapolis by road, roughly 45 minutes without traffic, so tell guests to allow an hour on a Friday evening. Parking is free on site.
Three farm rules affect the day, all on the farm page. Dogs are not allowed at Gale Woods out of consideration for the farm animals. The barn opens only during select public programs, so don't plan portraits inside it. And a farm market runs Saturday mornings from mid-June to mid-October, so ask how vendor load-in and parking work on a Saturday.
The pavilion page does not describe accessibility. The district's accessibility page asks visitors to inquire about accessible areas and facilities at the park they plan to visit, at 763-559-9000. Ask specifically about the route from parking to the pavilion and the ceremony site.
How should you plan photos at Gale Woods Farm?
Open sky, pasture and water mean the light changes far more across the day than it does in a ballroom. Tour at the same time of day as your ceremony and check these.
Light in the pavilion
- Where the roll-up doors face. Open doors are the biggest daylight source inside. Notice whether low evening sun will hit guests' eyes during toasts.
- No air conditioning. An uncooled building can get warm on a July afternoon. Schedule portraits before the reception and keep shade and water ready for the wedding party.
- After dark. The room looks like whatever lighting is in it. Ask which fixtures stay on; a vendor on the district's decor and rental list offers a lighting installation at Gale Woods.
Ceremony and portrait timing
For an outdoor ceremony, I recommend finishing at least 90 minutes before sunset so family formals and portraits still have daylight. Find your date in my Minnesota sunset times by month guide and work backward. In October the light goes early, and a first look earns its place.
Ask how far the ceremony site is from the pavilion and where guests and photographers may walk. The district's photography pass rules tell photographers to stay on designated trails and prohibit large props and furniture.
Weather backup
The pavilion page lists an outdoor ceremony option but no rain plan. Ask whether a rained-out ceremony moves inside, how long the room reset takes and where guests wait. Bonfire, sparklers and drones
Firelight rarely lights faces on its own, so if the bonfire is part of your evening, your photographer should plan on flash. The pages I reviewed list no decor rules, so ask about sparklers, lanterns and confetti before you buy them. Drones are settled: the district's park rules say drones are not allowed without a permit.
Where can you take portraits near Gale Woods Farm?
Start with the farm. Three Rivers names Gale Woods Farm among its top five places for wedding photos in the parks and notes that portrait and professional photography on park property requires a pass bought in advance.
The district's photography pass page defines a professional photographer as anyone being paid to take photos. An annual pass is $275 and an hourly pass is $28, tax included, and both must be bought at least two weeks ahead. If your photographer will work beyond your rented space, ask the events team whether a pass is needed.
Two other Three Rivers parks are close if you want a second setting:
- Carver Park Reserve in Victoria is about 7 miles by road, roughly 15 minutes. Its park page lists three lakes, the Lowry Nature Center and more than 1,700 feet of floating boardwalk.
- Noerenberg Gardens is about 7 miles away, roughly 20 minutes. Its pass rules differ, and no photographers are allowed into the gardens during weddings or other scheduled events.
For most couples the farm is enough. An off-site stop costs 45 minutes or more once you load a wedding party into cars, and that time comes out of cocktail hour.
