Almquist Farm Weddings in Hastings, MN: Planning Guide
Almquist Farm is a multigenerational family farm turned wedding venue at 21321 Polk Avenue, just south of Hastings, Minnesota. It hosts one event per day in a heated, air-conditioned barn that seats up to 340 guests, gives the wedding party a private granary, and stays open through the winter.
This guide covers what the farm publishes, what to ask on your tour, and how to plan your timeline and photos on more than 70 acres of rolling hills and oaks.
Where is Almquist Farm, and how long is the drive?
The farm's contact page gives a Hastings address and describes the farm as 30 minutes south of Minneapolis and St. Paul, while its wedding day tour page says 35 minutes. Check the route yourself at the hour your guests will actually travel rather than relying on either figure.
Put the real drive time on your wedding website and choose a getting-ready location with it in mind. The farm's website doesn't mention parking or accessibility, so ask about both on your tour.
What spaces does Almquist Farm have?
The farm's services page describes a rustic wedding barn that seats up to 340 guests at wood tables and chairs, with a dance floor and room to add a stage for a band. The tour page calls the same barn newly renovated, heated and air conditioned, with chandeliers and skylight cupolas, and says it comfortably accommodates 300-plus, so confirm the number for your actual floor plan.
- The granary. A 100-year-old, 1,800-square-foot space reserved for the wedding party all day, with dressing areas, central air, a private restroom, a kitchen, a lounge, a pool table and an entertainment center, per the services page.
- Outdoor dining. Seating for up to 400 guests overlooking rolling hills and century-old oak trees, according to the tour page.
- Fire pit and patio. A complimentary fire pit on the adjoining lawn, plus a patio lounge and an outdoor dance area.
The farm schedules only one event per day, so you won't share the grounds with another group. Its story page traces the land to Charles Almquist, who came to America in 1878 at age 23 and homesteaded 80 acres just south of Hastings. The barns and sheds use locally quarried limestone and reclaimed lumber from an old warehouse near the Mississippi in Hastings, and Paul and Kari Curtis, the fourth generation, run the venue today.
Catering, bar and vendor rules
For dinner, couples choose from a list of six caterers, and the services page says you are free to choose your favorite vendors for other services. The same page says it is common for weddings at the farm to have dinner for under $20 per person. Treat that as the farm's own claim and get current per-person quotes from the listed caterers.
What the farm's website doesn't cover: alcohol and bar service, rental hours and end time, and rules for candles, sparklers or confetti. Rental pricing is in a pamphlet you download by submitting your details on the wedding pricing page, so no rates are quoted here.
Is Almquist Farm a year-round venue?
Yes. The farm's winter page says it does not close during the winter months, that the wedding barn is heated, and that guests can be brought inside comfortably in rain or other uncomfortable weather. The services page adds that the farm sets up both an indoor and an outdoor reception area so weather isn't a worry.
That built-in backup still needs details. Ask when the weather call is made, whether the ceremony moves indoors as well as the reception, and who resets the chairs.
How should you plan photos at Almquist Farm?
Hills, old oaks, a patio and a barn with skylight cupolas give you variety without leaving the property. Tour at the time of day your ceremony will happen and check these.
Light in the barn and granary
- Daylight sources. Skylight cupolas and any open doors decide how much daylight reaches the tables and dance floor. Note where it falls at your dinner hour.
- Chandeliers after dark. Ask whether the chandeliers dim. Warm, dimmable fixtures make evening reception photos much easier to light.
- Getting-ready light. In the granary, find where daylight comes in and keep that spot clear for dress and detail photos.
Ceremony and portrait timing
For an outdoor ceremony, I recommend finishing at least 90 minutes before sunset so family formals and portraits keep daylight. Use my Minnesota sunset times by month guide to set the ceremony time. In December and January, sunset comes so early that portraits belong before the ceremony, as my Minnesota winter wedding photography guide explains.
Walking time on 70 acres
Big grounds mean the best portrait spot may be a walk away. Ask which areas guests and photographers may use, and build the walk each way into the timeline if you head into the hills.
Fire pit evenings
A fire pit is lovely in person but too dim to light faces on its own, so ask your photographer to plan flash for fire-lit candids. Ask the farm about sparklers before buying any, since its pages don't mention them.
Where can you take portraits near Almquist Farm?
For most couples the farm is the portrait location, and leaving costs time. If you want a second setting, there are public options nearby.
- Miesville Ravine Park Reserve. A Dakota County park where Trout Brook meets the Cannon River near Miesville, with trails through the Cannon River Valley. Its park page lists free admission and parking and daily hours of 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., and says the trailhead is closed for construction through November 2026. The page lists no photography rules, so call Dakota County Parks before planning a session.
- Downtown Hastings. Just north of the farm. My Hastings wedding photographer page and Hastings wedding venue guide cover the town; confirm any city permit rules before a session in a public park.
