St. Cloud Wedding Venues Worth the Drive

St. Cloud Wedding Venues Worth the Drive

St. Cloud gives you a city-owned convention centre with a 16,000-square-foot hall, a downtown hotel ballroom for 350, a golf club with three sizes of room, and one of the best public gardens in Minnesota available by ceremony permit. For a city an hour from Minneapolis, that is a lot of range.

If you are comparing regional cities, my Rochester venue guide covers the other end of the state on the same terms.

How far is St. Cloud, and does the drive change anything?

Visit Greater St. Cloud puts the drive time from Minneapolis at 1:06. That is close enough that metro guests will come up and back in a day, and far enough that a meaningful number of them would rather not drive home after a bar.

Plan for both. Put a hotel block on the invitation early, and think about where your out-of-town family sleeps relative to where you get ready, because every mile between those points comes out of your portrait time. If your vendors are travelling from the Twin Cities, build a travel buffer into both ends of the day and confirm load-in times in writing.

Which St. Cloud venues host weddings?

Three, each publishing enough detail on its own site that you can plan a guest count against it.

River's Edge Convention Center

City-owned, at 10 Fourth Avenue South. The centre's own weddings and socials page sets out terms that are unusually specific: weddings are booked not more than 12 months in advance, a 25 per cent non-refundable down payment is required, you must view the room before booking, room rent is a daily rate allowing use of the space from 7am to midnight, and all events end at midnight. All food must be ordered through an approved caterer, and setup and takedown of tables, chairs, stage and a basic sound system are included at no additional charge.

On size, the centre's room descriptions page lists Glenn Carlson Hall at approximately 16,000 square feet holding 700 to 1,800 people depending on setup, with smaller suites from about 1,320 to 4,283 square feet for anything from 64 to 500.

Best Western Plus Kelly Inn

At 100 Fourth Avenue South, the hotel's wedding package page lists a ballroom holding up to 350 with oval tables for dinner, and a package including complete use of the ballroom from 7am on the day, linens, napkins, china, glassware and flatware, complimentary cake cutting, a complimentary stay for the couple, discounted guest rooms, a menu sampling, a microphone and a wedding coordinator. The page states that a $750 non-refundable deposit secures the date and is applied toward food and beverage, with a $7,000 minimum purchase on Saturdays and $5,000 on Fridays. Those minimums are the real price signal; ask what they translate to per head at your guest count.

Territory Golf Club and Coyote Moon

At 480 55th Avenue SE, the club's banquets and meetings page confirms weddings and lists three rooms: the Tradition Room for up to 50 with a fireplace and French doors, the Patio Room for up to 60 with golf course views which combines with the adjoining lounge for up to 120, and a banquet hall for up to 275 with windows onto the course and access to an outside patio. The club customises meal plans for each group.

Can you get married in Munsinger Gardens?

Yes, and it is the prettiest ceremony ground in the city. The gardens sit on the Mississippi River and the city sells a ceremony permit rather than a venue rental. St. Cloud's Munsinger ceremony and photo permit page says reservations are scheduled in two-hour blocks and that the price includes both the ceremony and the photography permit: $250 for St. Cloud residents and $300 for non-residents, before tax. The city notes limited off-street parking and an optional ten chairs for guests unable to stand.

Read that list of inclusions carefully, because it tells you what kind of event this is. Ten chairs and a two-hour block is a ceremony and a portrait session, not a reception. Treat it as the beautiful first half of a day that finishes somewhere else, and settle the walk or drive between the two before you book either. Because there is no indoor alternative on site, decide your weather contingency early; my Minnesota wedding day rain plan is the conversation to have before planning an outdoor ceremony.

What else does the city rent?

Three park shelters, and one of them is right next to the gardens. The city's shelter rental page lists Riverside Park on the Mississippi adjacent to Munsinger and Clemens Gardens, available year-round and described as suiting any size group; Wilson Park in north-eastern St. Cloud on the river for up to 1,000 people from 1 May to 30 September; and Lions Park, an enclosed shelter for up to 50, also 1 May to 30 September. Shelters are booked in six-hour blocks, either 9am to 3pm or 4pm to 10pm, and groups under 75 can rent half a shelter at Riverside or Wilson, though another group may share the space.

Riverside is the interesting one for a Munsinger ceremony, because it puts your gathering a short walk from the garden permit rather than a drive. Rates and park rules sit in separate downloadable documents rather than on the page, so ask the Park and Recreation business office for both before you commit.

What should you check about light and portraits?

These four settings could not be more different, and each asks its own question on the tour.

  • At the convention centre, the question is whether any of your rooms has daylight, and where you go for portraits if the answer is no. Scout an exterior spot before the day rather than on it.
  • At the hotel, ask which way the ballroom windows face and what time direct sun hits the room in your month.
  • At the golf club, the banquet hall's windows and patio are the feature; ask what time the sun leaves the patio and whether the course is accessible for portraits during play.
  • At Munsinger, the tree canopy is dense and the light under it is soft but dim. Ask where you are allowed to stand, and plan the two-hour block so the ceremony is not at the harshest hour of the afternoon.
  • Everywhere: what time can vendors load in, and what time does the building lock? A midnight hard stop shapes your whole evening.

Then build the day backwards from sunset. My Minnesota wedding day timeline template is the structure I would use, with the drive between the gardens and the reception venue written in as a real block rather than a hopeful gap. If an outdoor ceremony is the whole point of your day, it is worth comparing Munsinger against the rest of the state in my roundup of outdoor ceremony locations in Minnesota, and the farm and barn properties in the surrounding counties in my Minnesota barn venue guide.

How do you get a marriage licence in Stearns County?

St. Cloud spans Stearns, Benton and Sherburne counties, and a Minnesota licence works statewide whichever county issues it. The county's marriage licence page says the licence is valid for six months from issuance with no refunds for unused licences, and that a licence issued in Stearns can be used anywhere in the state but must then be filed back in Stearns County. You start the application online through the Minnesota Official Marriage System, then both parties appear in person at the License Center to sign and pay, bringing proof of identification.

The county reduces the fee for couples who complete at least 12 hours of premarital education and present a Statement of Premarital Education, and it is strict about the form: the educator's statement must be on the educator's letterhead with a notarised signature, and a faxed or photocopied form is not acceptable. The amounts are set statewide by Minnesota Statutes section 517.08 at $125, or $50 with that qualifying education, which must include a premarital inventory and the teaching of communication and conflict management skills. Stearns takes applications at the Administration Center on Courthouse Square and at its service centre on County Road 138, and asks you to arrive by 4pm to be sure of service.

Should you bring a Twin Cities photographer to St. Cloud?

Only if the work is right for you, and you should ask the practical questions either way. I am based in Minneapolis, and travel is included within 40 miles of downtown Minneapolis. St. Cloud is beyond that, so travel is billed at cost with no markup and quoted before you book. My wedding collections start at $3,100.

What matters more than the postcode is whether the timeline accounts for the distance. A photographer driving an hour each way needs the schedule to be honest about arrival and departure, and a day split between a garden ceremony and a downtown reception needs that transfer written down. My guide to when to book a Minnesota wedding photographer covers how early the good dates go, and if you want to talk yours through, tell me your venue and date. You can read how I work as a St. Cloud wedding photographer and across Minnesota, and the same corridor runs through Elk River and Rogers.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a wedding ceremony at Munsinger Gardens?

The city charges for a permit rather than a venue rental. Its ceremony and photo permit page lists two-hour blocks at $250 for St. Cloud residents and $300 for non-residents before tax, including both the ceremony and photography permits, with limited off-street parking and an optional ten chairs provided.

Which St. Cloud venue holds the most guests?

River's Edge Convention Center. Its own room descriptions list Glenn Carlson Hall at approximately 16,000 square feet holding 700 to 1,800 people depending on setup, and the Terry Haws Center sections go higher still, up to 3,000 in Haws Center C. Of the private venues, the Best Western Plus Kelly Inn ballroom holds up to 350 and Territory's banquet hall up to 275.

How far ahead can I book River's Edge Convention Center?

Not more than 12 months in advance, which the centre states plainly on its weddings page. It also requires a 25 per cent non-refundable down payment and asks that you view the room before booking. If you are used to metro venues taking bookings two years out, plan your engagement timeline around that difference.

Do I have to use a specific caterer in St. Cloud?

It depends on the venue. River's Edge requires all food to be ordered through an approved caterer and maintains its own list. The hotel and the golf club both handle catering in house. A city park shelter leaves catering to you, subject to the park rules, which is worth asking for in writing before you sign anything.

Is a Stearns County marriage licence valid outside the county?

Yes. The county states that a licence issued in Stearns can be used anywhere in the state of Minnesota, but that it must then be filed back in Stearns County. It is valid for six months from the date of issuance and no refunds are available for unused licences, so do not apply months earlier than you need to.
