Rochester gives you an unusual range for a city its size: a city-owned Tudor mansion with published rates, a convention centre with a ballroom for more than 4,000, an art centre on the river and a restored 1915 armory. Four venues, four completely different days.
If you are weighing Rochester against the metro, my guide to when to book a Minnesota wedding photographer covers how far ahead the good dates go in both markets.
What makes planning a Rochester wedding different?
Two things. First, the hotel supply is unusual: Rochester carries far more rooms than a city of its size normally would because of Mayo Clinic, which means a guest block is rarely the constraint it is elsewhere. Second, the drive. Experience Rochester's own getting here page puts Minneapolis and Saint Paul at 65 minutes away, which is close enough that metro guests will drive down and back in a day and far enough that some of them will not.
Plan for both. Put the ceremony late enough that a morning drive from the Cities is comfortable, and make the hotel block obvious on the invitation so the people who would rather stay do. If your own vendors are coming from the metro, build in a travel buffer on both ends of the day rather than assuming a clean run down Highway 52.
Which Rochester venues host weddings?
Four, each of which publishes enough on its own site to plan against.
Plummer House
An English Tudor mansion built by Dr Henry S. Plummer and his wife Daisy, begun in 1917 and completed in 1924, with 49 rooms, more than 300 feet long and five stories high, on eleven acres of landscaped grounds. It is owned and run by Rochester Parks and Recreation, and the city's Plummer House page describes it as a venue for weddings, receptions, meetings and parties for groups up to 100. One structural limit to know before you tour: the first floor is accessible and the remaining floors are not.
Mayo Civic Center
At 30 Civic Center Drive SE, the centre's own celebration and party space page describes three ballrooms and more than 23 smaller meeting rooms and boardrooms, with a ballroom capacity above 4,000. Catering is in-house. This is the option when the guest list is genuinely large, or when you want ceremony, cocktail hour and dinner in three separate rooms without anyone leaving the building.
Rochester Art Center
Run by the same team as the Civic Center and set on the banks of the Zumbro River downtown, the art centre's wedding page describes a lobby with soaring ceilings and abundant natural light, an outdoor terrace with cafe lighting, outdoor speakers and a mobile bar, and access to Mayo Park for ceremonies. Food is prepared on site in the banquet kitchen. A gallery-style room with big glass is the most forgiving kind of space to photograph in, and the terrace gives you an outdoor option that is not a parking lot.
The Castle
At 121 North Broadway Avenue, the building's own site describes a Romanesque Revival armory built in 1915 and co-funded by the city and state, bought and renovated by the Arnett family in 2018. The third-floor ballroom holds up to 300 with soaring ceilings, arched windows, exposed brick and a private bar, plus bridal and groom suites. The second floor carries four private lounges and the first floor offers private dining. Downtown, historic and self-contained, which is a rare combination anywhere in Minnesota.
How much does the city-owned Plummer House cost?
This is one of the few venue prices in Minnesota you can pin down before you call anyone. The city's published 2026 rental rates are $750 plus tax for the house alone for 1 to 100 people Sunday through Thursday, or $1,000 plus tax Friday and Saturday. The house and grounds together are $1,000 plus tax Sunday through Thursday and $1,250 plus tax Friday and Saturday.
The difference between those two lines is the whole planning decision. Renting the grounds as well is what buys you exclusive use of the outdoor space for your ceremony and portraits; renting the house alone leaves the grounds open, and the city notes that the grounds are otherwise open to the public from sunrise to sunset. If your ceremony is outside, book the grounds. Deposits, catering and alcohol terms are not published on the rate page, so ask the Parks and Recreation office directly and get the answer in writing.
What should you ask about accessibility and guest flow?
Rochester's best venues are historic buildings, and historic buildings have stairs. The city states plainly that only the first floor of the Plummer House is accessible. That is not a reason to avoid it; it is a reason to plan.
- Which rooms will guests actually use, and are all of them on an accessible level?
- Where are the accessible restrooms in relation to the reception room?
- If the ceremony is on the grounds and dinner is upstairs, how does someone using a wheelchair get between them?
- Is there step-free access from the parking area, and how far is that walk in heels or in January?
- Where do you get ready, and is that room on the same level as everything else?
Ask these on the tour with specific relatives in mind. It is a far better use of a site visit than photographing the chandeliers.
What should you check about light and portraits?
Each of these four venues asks a different question, and you can answer all of them on a single visit at roughly your ceremony hour.
- At the Plummer House, where does the sun sit on the grounds in your month, and is there a covered spot if it rains?
- At the art centre, which way does the glass face, and what time does direct sun hit the lobby?
- At The Castle, the arched windows are the feature: ask what time of day they light the ballroom and whether the room is used for the ceremony as well as dinner.
- At the Civic Center, the question is the opposite one: which rooms have any daylight at all, and where do we go for portraits if the answer is none?
- Everywhere: what time can vendors load in, and what time does the building lock?
Settle the weather contingency early, especially for a Plummer House ceremony on the lawn. My Minnesota wedding day rain plan is the version of that conversation I use with couples, and my Minnesota wedding day timeline template is the structure I would build a Rochester day on, with the drive added at both ends.
How do you get a marriage licence in Olmsted County?
Rochester is in Olmsted County, and a Minnesota licence is valid statewide whichever county issues it. Olmsted County's marriage licence page lists the fee as $125, or $50 with a signed and notarised premarital education statement. You complete an online application first through the Minnesota Official Marriage System, then come in person to sign, which you may do up to 90 days in advance. Both of you need to be present, you need valid identification such as a driver's licence, state ID or passport, and you need an appointment through the county's online appointment system. Applications are taken at the Olmsted County Government Center, 151 Fourth Street SE in Rochester.
The fee and the reduced rate come from Minnesota Statutes section 517.08, which requires at least 12 hours of premarital education including a premarital inventory and the teaching of communication and conflict management skills, and sets the licence's validity at six months. Because Olmsted requires an appointment, book that slot the same week you book your officiant.
Should you hire a Twin Cities photographer for a Rochester wedding?
Sometimes, and you should ask the practical questions rather than assume either way. I am based in Minneapolis, and travel is included within 40 miles of downtown Minneapolis. Rochester is beyond that, so travel is billed at cost with no markup and quoted before you book. My wedding collections start at $3,100.
What actually matters is coverage and logistics. A photographer driving an hour each way needs the timeline to account for it, and if your getting-ready location and your venue are 20 minutes apart you want that written down early. My guide to how many hours of coverage a Minnesota wedding needs is a good place to work out the shape of your day first, and my list of contract questions worth asking covers travel, second shooters and overtime. Smaller Rochester weddings, particularly at the Plummer House, often fit the approach on my intimate wedding page. If you want to talk it through, tell me your venue and date, or read how I work as a Rochester wedding photographer and across Minnesota. You can also see the full range of what I offer on my wedding photography page.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to rent the Plummer House for a wedding?
The city's published 2026 rates are $750 plus tax for the house alone Sunday through Thursday and $1,000 plus tax Friday and Saturday, for 1 to 100 people. Adding the grounds takes it to $1,000 plus tax midweek and $1,250 plus tax on Friday or Saturday, as the city's rate page sets out.
Which Rochester venue holds the most guests?
Mayo Civic Center, comfortably. Its own page describes three ballrooms and more than 23 smaller rooms, with a ballroom capacity above 4,000. The Castle's third-floor ballroom holds up to 300. The Plummer House is capped at 100. Of these four, only the Civic Center takes a list over 300.
Is the Plummer House wheelchair accessible?
Partly. The city states that the first floor of the Plummer House is accessible and that all remaining floors are not. If you have guests who cannot manage stairs, plan the ceremony, dinner and toasts so that nobody has to change floors during the day, and confirm restroom access on your tour.
How far is Rochester from Minneapolis for wedding guests?
Experience Rochester puts the drive from Minneapolis and Saint Paul at 65 minutes. In practice, allow more on a Friday afternoon and in winter. It is close enough that metro guests will treat it as a day trip, so a late-afternoon ceremony and an obvious hotel block will serve both the drivers and the stayers.
Do I need an appointment to get a marriage licence in Olmsted County?
Yes. Olmsted County asks you to start the application online through the Minnesota Official Marriage System and then book an appointment through the county's online appointment system to sign in person, with both of you present and valid photo identification. You can sign up to 90 days in advance, and the licence is valid for six months.
