Red Wing Wedding Venues on the Mississippi

Red Wing Wedding Venues on the Mississippi

Red Wing has five venues I could confirm on their own websites are booking weddings: the St. James Hotel, Round Barn Farm, Willow Brooke Farm, The Skyroom and Mississippi National Golf Links. The city also rents a heated year-round building at Colvill Park for about 151 people at a published rate.

This is a river town under limestone bluffs, and the geography does more to your wedding day than the floor plan does. Everything below comes from the operator's own page or the city's and county's own pages, and where a venue does not publish a number I have said so. If you are comparing river towns, my Hastings venue guide covers the next stretch of the Mississippi upstream.

Which Red Wing venues can I confirm host weddings?

Five, and they cover the full range: a Victorian hotel on Main Street, two farms on the bluffs, a modern room on the west side and a golf clubhouse. Decide whether you want your guests sleeping on site before you compare anything else, because three of the five offer rooms and two do not.

St. James Hotel

The St. James at 406 Main Street is the obvious downtown option and publishes capacities for five distinct spaces: the Summit Room up to 240, the Portside Room up to 140, the Laurentine Room and the Historic Area up to 120 each, and Jimmy's Pub with the Oak Room up to 77. Catering is in-house, with Scarlet Kitchen and Bar for restaurant service and The Port as a speakeasy for late drinks, and the hotel has 68 Victorian-styled guestrooms including two apartment-style suites. Rates and minimums are not published, so ask for the food and beverage minimum as well as the room rental when you enquire.

Round Barn Farm

Round Barn Farm sits at 28650 Wildwood Lane on 35 acres above the river. Its own site describes a 1914 round barn on the National Register of Historic Places, a modern wedding pavilion, gardens, and weddings from 10 to 300 people, with five guest rooms on site: two deluxe suites and three traditional rooms. It also publishes one concrete number, a Thursday-to-Friday package at $9,395 that includes venue access, rehearsal dinner space and all five guest rooms on the Thursday night. A weekday package like that is worth a serious look if your guest list is small and travelling anyway.

Willow Brooke Farm

Willow Brooke, at 29212 Orchard Road, is a working vineyard as well as a venue. Its property page lists indoor and outdoor ceremony options for up to 300 guests across 80 acres, including the heated and air-conditioned White Willow Barn, a 150-year-old historic barn, a farmhouse, a barrel lounge, a fire pit and the vineyard itself, with on-site accommodation for the wedding party. Wine service comes from the property and there is a host-your-own-bar option. Ask how the two barns are used together, because a venue with a climate-controlled building and a historic one gives you a genuine wet-weather plan rather than a hopeful one. My rain plan guide covers how to write that into the schedule.

The Skyroom

The Skyroom, at 1311 West 6th Street, states on its own site that 2026 dates are still available and describes flexible layouts, an outdoor ceremony space and the option to add the on-site Walsh House property to a wedding package. Capacity and pricing are not published, so those are your first two questions.

Mississippi National at 409 Golf Links Drive is a 36-hole facility that publishes a banquet room, a bar area and a scenic outdoor patio for events up to 200. Individual room capacities and catering detail are not on the site. A golf clubhouse usually means a big west-facing window wall, so ask which way the banquet room faces and what time the sun hits it in your month.

What does the City of Red Wing rent, and what are the rules?

The Colvill Courtyard is the city's best-kept secret for weddings. It is a fully enclosed, heated and air-conditioned building at Colvill Park, and the city's facility page puts capacity at about 151 people, a full day at $460 and a half day of four hours or less at $245, with a refundable $205 security deposit and the adjoining courtyard garden available for $55 to $75 depending on duration. The fee covers 20 rectangular tables, four round tables and 200 chairs, and the building has a fireplace, restrooms, power and a kitchen with a sink, prep area, refrigerator and freezer. It is bookable year-round, up to a year in advance, and you collect a key from the Public Works building during business hours.

The city also lists reservable shelters at AP Anderson, Bay Point, Central, Colvill and Memorial parks, available roughly mid-May to mid-October and weather dependent, through a facility use form on the park shelters page. Before you plan anything outdoors, read the city's park reservation regulations. Alcohol may be served and consumed by people 21 and over during park hours but may not be sold in a city park at all, and serving after 10:30pm needs written police confirmation and director approval. Park hours run sunrise to 10:30pm, the Colvill Courtyard may run to midnight, and no reservation starts before 8am. Tents cannot be staked into the ground without approval, which is the single rule most likely to catch out a rental company on the morning of your wedding.

How do you get a marriage licence in Goodhue County?

Red Wing is the Goodhue County seat, so this one is easy. The county's Recorder's Office page says applications are taken at the Goodhue County Government Center at 509 West 5th Street in Red Wing, both people must apply in person, and you need a driver's licence or another government-issued identification card. The fee is $125, or $50 with proof of 12 hours of premarital counselling. A licence must be used within six months or it expires, and a Minnesota licence is only valid in Minnesota.

The fee structure is statutory: Minnesota Statutes section 517.08 sets the $125 fee and the $50 rate for couples who complete at least 12 hours of premarital education covering a premarital inventory and communication and conflict management skills, delivered by a qualified provider, and fixes the six-month validity. The licence is good anywhere in the state, so if you live in the metro and are marrying at a Red Wing farm you can apply at home. My step-by-step Minnesota marriage licence guide covers the whole process, and my Northfield venue guide does the same job for Rice County if you are comparing southern Minnesota towns.

What should you plan for light on the river bluffs?

Red Wing is hemmed in by bluffs, and bluffs eat daylight. On the valley floor the light goes flat and blue noticeably before the published sunset time, because the sun drops behind the ridge rather than the horizon. That is a gift and a trap. The gift is a long, soft window of even light with no harsh shadows. The trap is that if you have planned your couple portraits for the last 20 minutes before sunset, you may find the good light ended half an hour earlier.

My recommendation for any Red Wing venue is to bring the portrait window forward by 30 to 45 minutes from what you would do in an open field, and to scout the direction the site actually faces. A venue on top of the bluffs, like the two farms, keeps its light much later than a venue on Main Street. Downtown, the brick and the river are worth 15 minutes on their own, but they need a plan for getting there and back. The same logic applies to autumn dates, when the colour on the bluffs is the whole reason people book here; my notes on fall wedding venues in Minnesota go through the timing.

What should you sort out about travel and lodging?

Red Wing sits outside the 40-mile radius in which I include travel free, and the same will be true of most Twin Cities vendors, so ask every one of them about a travel charge in writing before you sign. Budget more than an hour each way from the metro and more on a summer Saturday, and be honest about it when you set your ceremony time.

Lodging is the other half of the same problem. Three of the five venues have rooms on site but only a handful each, so most of your guests will be booking in town. Red Wing is a tourist town with limited inventory, which means room blocks go early and get tight around autumn colour weekends. Sort them at the same time as you book the venue rather than six months later. The same is true for photographers and other vendors who have to travel here; my guide to when to book a wedding photographer in Minnesota explains why the calendar fills earlier than couples expect. If you would like to talk through a Red Wing date, get in touch, or read more about how I work as a Red Wing wedding photographer and elsewhere as a Minnesota wedding photographer.

What should you ask a Red Wing venue before you sign?

  • What is the seated capacity for my layout with a dance floor, not the theoretical maximum?
  • Is there a food and beverage minimum on top of the room rental, and does it change by season or day?
  • How many rooms are on site, and which nights are included?
  • Where exactly is the wet-weather plan, and how late can we make the call?
  • What time do vendors get in, and what time does everything have to be out?
  • Which direction does the ceremony site face, and where is the sun at that hour in my month?

Two of these are specific to a bluff town, and they are the two couples forget. If you are choosing between a farm and a barn elsewhere in the state, my Minnesota barn wedding page and my Hastings page cover the nearest comparable options.

Frequently asked questions

Which Red Wing venue holds the most guests?

Round Barn Farm and Willow Brooke Farm both publish a ceiling of 300, making them the largest. The St. James Hotel's biggest single room, the Summit Room, holds up to 240, and Mississippi National publishes events up to 200. The Skyroom does not publish a capacity, so ask for the seated number with a dance floor.

Can you serve alcohol at a Red Wing park wedding?

You can serve and consume it if everyone drinking is 21 or over and it happens during park hours, but alcohol may not be sold in a city park at all. Serving past 10:30pm requires written police confirmation and approval from the director, so a cash bar or a late reception in a park is not a straightforward plan.

How much does the Colvill Courtyard cost?

The city's facility page lists $460 for a full day and $245 for four hours or less, plus a refundable $205 security deposit, with the courtyard garden from $55 to $75. The fee includes 20 rectangular tables, four round tables and 200 chairs, and the building is heated and air conditioned, so it works year round.

Do I need a Goodhue County licence to marry in Red Wing?

No. A Minnesota marriage licence is valid anywhere in the state no matter which county issues it, so apply wherever is most convenient. Both of you must appear in person with government-issued identification, the fee is the same statewide, and the licence expires six months after it is issued whether you use it or not.

When should you book a Red Wing wedding venue?

Earlier than you would in the metro, especially for late September and October. This is a small town with a big autumn tourist season, so venue dates, hotel rooms and travelling vendors all compete for the same weekends. If a specific autumn Saturday matters to you, treat 18 months out as normal rather than cautious.
