Minnesota Vow Renewal Photography: How to Plan One

Vow renewals are, frankly, the most relaxed sessions I shoot. Nobody is nervous, nobody is watching a timeline, and the couple already knows exactly how they feel about each other. If you are thinking about one for a fifth, tenth, or twenty-fifth anniversary, here is how to plan it.

When do people renew their vows?

The common milestones are ten, twenty, and twenty-five years, but the more meaningful reasons I hear are specific: a couple who eloped and never had a ceremony, a couple who married during a pandemic with eight guests, a couple coming through a hard chapter, or one who never had photographs the first time. None of those need a round number attached.

Somewhere with meaning

The best vow renewal locations are personal rather than impressive. The park where you got engaged, the church where you married, your own backyard, or the lake cabin your family has used for thirty years all photograph better than a rented ballroom, because the story is already in the frame.

Small venues that suit 10 to 40 guests

Como Park Conservatory's Sunken Garden, the Lake Harriet Bandshell and Rose Gardens, Landmark Center in St. Paul, Noerenberg Gardens on Lake Minnetonka, and the smaller rooms at historic Twin Cities venues all handle intimate ceremonies. Many require reservations, so check with each location directly.

Up north

The North Shore between Duluth and Grand Marais is the most-requested destination for Minnesota vow renewals, and for good reason. A ceremony on the rocks at Tettegouche or Split Rock with six people present is unforgettable, and lodging doubles as the reception.

What a vow renewal ceremony looks like

There is no legal component, which means no license, no officiant requirement, and no rules. Most of the ones I photograph run 15 to 20 minutes: a short reading, personal vows written to each other, sometimes a ring blessing or a new band, and often children participating. Then dinner.

Because there is no formality, the photography is almost entirely documentary. My coverage is usually two to three hours: 30 minutes before the ceremony, the ceremony itself, family portraits, a portrait walk with just the two of you, and the first part of the meal.

What should you wear to a vow renewal?

Almost nobody wears their original wedding dress, and I would not push you to. What works best on camera is something you feel genuinely good in now: a dress in a color you love, a well-cut suit, coordinated but not matching. Couples who dress like themselves rather than like a wedding photograph better, every time.

The one thing I recommend to everyone

Write new vows and read them out loud. Not the originals. Ten or twenty years in, what you would promise each other now is completely different from what you promised then, and it is more specific and more moving. Those are the frames that make couples cry when they open the gallery, every single time.

Family portraits are the other reason to do this

Most couples have beautiful photos of their wedding day and almost nothing formal of their family since. A vow renewal is the natural excuse to get everyone dressed and in one place. I always build 20 minutes of family portraits into the coverage, including grandparents when they are there. Those images become the ones on the wall.
