A Neighbourhood, Not a Single Spot
Cathedral Hill is the compact version of Summit Avenue: the same era of stone and brick, but denser and more lived-in, with cafés, a landmark restaurant patio, and the Cathedral's dome visible from most corners. Sessions here move — a few frames on Selby, a walk up toward the Cathedral, then a block over to Summit for the mansions.
It works especially well for couples who met or live in St. Paul and want photos that look like their actual neighbourhood rather than a park. Coffee in hand on Selby is a real photo, not a prop.
Access and Timing
Sidewalks and public streets need no permit. The Cathedral grounds have their own photography policy and the restaurant patios are private, so anything on those needs a quick confirmation first — I handle that. Late afternoon is best; the hill faces roughly west, and the last hour of light comes down Selby and across the Cathedral's facade.
Weekend brunch hours are busy on Selby. Weekday evenings and Sunday late afternoons are quieter and give us the sidewalks to ourselves.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can we take engagement photos at the Cathedral of Saint Paul?
From the public sidewalks and approaches, yes, and the dome makes a dramatic backdrop. The Cathedral grounds and steps have their own photography policy that changes with services and events; I confirm current rules before we plan around them.
How much do Cathedral Hill engagement photos cost?
Engagement and couples sessions start at $450, with the full hour at Twin Cities locations, all edited images, and a private online gallery in 2–3 weeks. St. Paul is inside my no-travel-fee radius.
Can we combine Cathedral Hill with Summit Avenue?
That's the standard plan — Summit's east end is one block south of Selby, so a single session covers the Cathedral, the Selby brick and the Summit mansions on foot without moving the car.
What should we wear for a Cathedral Hill session?
The backdrops are warm brick and grey stone, so rich solids and classic pieces photograph best — a dress with movement, a jacket, earth tones or jewel tones. This is a good location for dressing up a notch.
Is there parking on Cathedral Hill?
Street parking on Selby and the side streets is usually manageable outside of brunch hours and Cathedral services. I'll suggest a meeting spot based on your session time.
