Western Wisconsin Wedding Photography Guide: Hudson, River Falls & St. Croix Valley (2026)

The St. Croix Valley is one of the most under-photographed wedding regions in the Upper Midwest — 25 minutes from downtown St. Paul, Wisconsin marriage law, and river-bluff scenery that competes with anywhere in Minnesota. Here's the Western Wisconsin wedding photography guide I hand every couple who lands on the wrong side of the state line.

Wisconsin marriage license basics (for MN couples)

Wisconsin licenses are issued at the county register of deeds, valid statewide, $110 fee. Wisconsin has a 5-day waiting period (waivable for a fee) and a 30-day expiration — tighter window than Minnesota's 6 months. Out-of-state couples must apply in the Wisconsin county where the ceremony will occur. St. Croix County (Hudson) and Pierce County (River Falls) both accept walk-in appointments.

Best Western Wisconsin wedding venues

The Phipps Inn — Hudson

1884 Queen Anne Victorian on Hudson's historic Third Street. Small weddings (up to 30), B&B lodging, walkable to the St. Croix riverfront. My most-booked Hudson venue for intimate weddings.

Willow River State Park — Hudson

Willow Falls, Little Falls, and the Willow River gorge. Wisconsin State Parks require a $50 wedding permit (similar to Minnesota) and a park vehicle pass. Ceremonies allowed at the Willow Falls overlook with permit.

Hudson House Grand Hotel & Willow River Room

Full-service Hudson wedding venue for 150–250 guests, ballroom, river-view suites. Where I shoot most Hudson wedding receptions.

Troy Burne Golf Village — Hudson

Arthur Hills-designed course, clubhouse ballroom, rolling St. Croix Valley vistas. Popular for 100–180 guest weddings.

Kilkarney Hills Golf Club — River Falls

Bluff-top ceremony site overlooking the Kinnickinnic River valley. Reception hall for 175. Peak fall color mid-October.

Osceola Hotel & Cascade Falls

Osceola's downtown boutique hotel + the Cascade Falls staircase, one block from Main Street. Elopement territory.

Somerset — barn country

Legacy Hill Farm and Meadow & Barn are technically Somerset-adjacent (Minnesota side of the river). On the Wisconsin side, Somerset offers the Apple River and a cluster of newer barn venues.

My favorite St. Croix Valley portrait locations

Lakefront Park in downtown Hudson at golden hour — the river, the lift bridge, the bluffs behind. Willow Falls at midday when the sun cuts into the gorge. Kinnickinnic State Park where the Kinni meets the St. Croix. All within 20 minutes of downtown Hudson.

Cross-border wedding logistics

Most of my Wisconsin couples live in the Twin Cities and get ready in Minnesota — Hudson venues are close enough that I bounce back and forth day-of without adding travel to your invoice. I include Hudson, River Falls, Somerset, and Osceola in my standard Twin Cities service area. See the dedicated Hudson WI wedding photographer page for local coverage, or the Twin Cities wedding photographer hub for metro service.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Wisconsin marriage license if my wedding is in Hudson?

Yes — Wisconsin ceremonies require a Wisconsin marriage license issued in the county where the ceremony takes place. A Hudson wedding needs a St. Croix County (WI) license; a Minnesota license is not valid across the border.

How long does it take to get married in Western Wisconsin?

Wisconsin has a 5-day waiting period after the marriage license is issued, and licenses expire after 30 days — a tighter window than Minnesota's 6-month expiration.

Do Twin Cities wedding photographers charge travel fees for Hudson weddings?

Most Twin Cities-based wedding photographers, including me, include Hudson, River Falls, and Somerset in their standard service area with no additional travel fee. Osceola and points further north may include mileage.

What's the best Western Wisconsin wedding venue for fall color?

Kilkarney Hills in River Falls, Willow River State Park in Hudson, and Troy Burne Golf Village all peak in early-to-mid October along the St. Croix Valley bluff line. Book 12–14 months in advance for these dates.

Can I have a wedding at Willow Falls in Hudson?

Yes — Willow River State Park allows wedding ceremonies at the Willow Falls overlook with a $50 Wisconsin State Parks wedding permit filed at least 30 days in advance, plus a park vehicle pass for every car entering.
