About Courthouse Wedding Photography

Courthouse wedding photography is one of my favorite session types in Minneapolis. It's quick, it's emotional, and it's almost never staged. Most courthouse ceremonies in the Twin Cities last 8–12 minutes — so the photographer's job is to capture the walk in, the vows, the first kiss, the signing, and a 20-minute portrait block immediately after, all without breaking the calm of the day.

Who it's for

Couples eloping at Hennepin County Government Center, Ramsey County Courthouse, or Anoka County. Also: surprise legal weddings before a bigger celebration, immigration-deadline weddings, and couples who want the legal ceremony documented privately before a future symbolic ceremony.

What's included

1–2 hours of coverage, arrival meet-up at the courthouse, full ceremony documentation, signing of the marriage license, a 20–30 minute portrait walk afterward at a nearby location (Stone Arch Bridge, the Mississippi riverfront, Mears Park, or the courthouse plaza), hand-edited gallery in 3–4 weeks.

Best venues & locations

Hennepin County Government Center has the most photogenic interior in the Twin Cities — the Atrium light wells are exceptional at midday. Ramsey County's interior is more traditional and works well for classic editorial portraits. Anoka County weddings often pair with the Rum River trail for outdoor portraits afterward.

What to expect at a Hennepin County wedding

Hennepin County Government Center weddings happen weekdays only, by appointment. The ceremony room is on the 6th floor — small, naturally lit, and surprisingly cinematic. Plan to arrive 20 minutes early. Total time inside is typically under an hour. Bring the marriage license, two witnesses, and a state-issued ID.

After the ceremony

The Stone Arch Bridge is a 7-minute walk and gives 20 minutes of stunning portrait backdrops. The Mill City ruins, Father Hennepin Bluff Park, and Gold Medal Park are all within a 10-minute walk. Most courthouse couples grab dinner reservations afterward — I can recommend nearby spots that handle small wedding parties well.

Courthouse Wedding FAQ

How much does a courthouse wedding photographer cost in Minneapolis?

Courthouse wedding photography in the Twin Cities runs $700–$1,800 depending on coverage length. My courthouse packages start at $850 for 1 hour and $1,400 for 2 hours.

Can you photograph inside Hennepin County Government Center?

Yes — photography is allowed inside the ceremony room and the atrium spaces. I've shot dozens of Hennepin County ceremonies and know the building's best light by time of day. No permits required for personal wedding photography.

How long does a typical courthouse wedding take?

The legal ceremony itself is 8–12 minutes. With check-in, the wait, vows, signing, and a few celebratory hugs, plan on being inside the building for 45–60 minutes. A 1-hour photography package covers all of that.

Do I need to bring witnesses?

Hennepin and Ramsey counties both require two witnesses over 16. I'm happy to act as one of your witnesses — many of my courthouse couples have me sign so they don't have to coordinate extra guests.

Do you travel for weddings across Minnesota?

Yes — travel within 60 miles of Minneapolis is included. Beyond that, a flat travel fee covers mileage, lodging if overnight, and any permit fees. Most Minnesota and western Wisconsin weddings stay inside that 60-mile zone.

How far in advance should I book?

Book 8–12 months ahead for peak season (May–October). Off-season dates (November–April) often have 3–4 month availability. A 25% retainer holds your date.

What is your photography style?

Editorial-documentary with warm, true-to-life color. Half the day is candid documentary moments, the other half is intentional editorial portraits. Every image is hand-edited — no presets, no trendy filters, no AI.
