About Lakeside Wedding Photography

Minnesota has 11,842 lakes — and lakeside weddings make up nearly a third of the weddings I shoot. Whether it's a Lake Minnetonka boat wedding, a North Shore ceremony on Lake Superior, or a Brainerd Lakes cabin weekend, the water dictates the timeline: ceremonies face east at sunrise weddings, west at sunset weddings, and golden-hour portraits are always on the dock.

Who it's for

Couples with family lake property, couples hosting at lakeside venues (Lafayette Club, The Pillars at Plymouth Creek, Grand View Lodge, Lutsen Resort), and adventure couples planning a North Shore destination wedding within Minnesota.

What's included

Full wedding coverage with timeline built around the sunset over water, weatherproof gear for dock and boat coverage, second-photographer recommended for boat ceremonies (so coverage continues on shore), and a pre-wedding scout for properties I haven't shot before.

Best venues & locations

Standout Minnesota lake venues: Lafayette Club & Minikahda Club on Lake Minnetonka, Grand View Lodge & Madden's on Gull Lake (Brainerd Lakes), Lutsen Resort & Bluefin Bay on Lake Superior, Glensheen Mansion in Duluth, and private family cabins across the Boundary Waters and Whitefish Chain.

Lake Minnetonka, Brainerd Lakes, North Shore — what's different

Minnetonka: shorter travel, easier vendor logistics, more formal venues. Brainerd Lakes: cabin-weekend energy, multi-day events, casual elegance. North Shore: dramatic ceremony backdrops, weather-dependent, often a full destination wedding for guests. Each region rewards a different photography approach.

Weather contingencies on the water

Wind matters more than rain on a lake wedding. We'll always have a Plan B indoor location agreed on by the morning of the wedding. For dock-side ceremonies I bring a backup outdoor location 5 minutes from the venue in case wind pushes us off the water.

Lakeside Wedding FAQ

Do you shoot weddings on Lake Minnetonka?

Yes — Lake Minnetonka is one of my most-photographed Minnesota wedding regions. Lafayette Club, Minikahda Club, private estates in Wayzata, Excelsior, and Orono, and boat ceremonies departing from Wayzata Bay. Travel is included within 60 miles.

Can you photograph a wedding on a boat?

Yes. I've shot ceremonies aboard the Lady of the Lake, Paradise Charter Cruises, and private pontoons. For boat ceremonies I recommend the Pearl or Sapphire package and a second photographer who stays on shore to capture wide context shots and guest arrival.

What's the best time of day for lakeside wedding portraits?

Golden hour over open water — 45 minutes before sunset for the warm glow, then 10 minutes after sunset for blue hour silhouettes. We'll plan the ceremony time backward from sunset so portraits land in that window.

Do you travel for weddings across Minnesota?

Yes — travel within 60 miles of Minneapolis is included. Beyond that, a flat travel fee covers mileage, lodging if overnight, and any permit fees. Most Minnesota and western Wisconsin weddings stay inside that 60-mile zone.

How far in advance should I book?

Book 8–12 months ahead for peak season (May–October). Off-season dates (November–April) often have 3–4 month availability. A 25% retainer holds your date.

What is your photography style?

Editorial-documentary with warm, true-to-life color. Half the day is candid documentary moments, the other half is intentional editorial portraits. Every image is hand-edited — no presets, no trendy filters, no AI.
