Small Town, Big Lake
Excelsior gives you two sessions in a five-minute walk: a genuinely charming main street, and then the Commons opening onto the lake with the docks and the bay in front of you. Couples who want a look that's warmer and less urban than Minneapolis, without driving to the North Shore, land here.
Summer is the obvious season — boats in, the Commons green, long evenings — but late September on Minnetonka is my favourite: warm shoreline colour, calm water and a 7 PM sunset that fits a normal after-work timeline.
Planning the Session
Water Street and the Commons are public. Some docks and the marina are private; we use the public docks and I'll steer around the rest. Summer weekend evenings are busy with events at the Commons — weekday evenings are much quieter and the light is identical.
Excelsior is about 25 minutes west of Minneapolis and inside my 40-mile no-travel-fee radius, so it prices the same as an in-city session.

That's the whole point of Excelsior. The bay faces west-ish from the Commons and the point, so the last twenty minutes of light go straight across the water. It's the shot every Excelsior couple books for.
Can we include our boat?
Yes — if you keep a boat on Minnetonka or can borrow one, a short stretch on the water at golden hour is one of the best things we can do here. Tell me in advance and we'll plan the timing around launch and light.
