Best Months for a Minnesota Wedding (A Photographer's Guide)

After photographing 200+ Minnesota weddings, I''ve learned every month has its own personality — and the "best" month depends on what matters most to you: light, color, budget, or availability. Here''s the honest, photographer''s-eye breakdown.
Quick answer
Late September through mid-October is the most-requested window in Minnesota — peak fall color, golden light, cool but comfortable temps. June is the second-most-booked month for long days and reliable weather. January–March offers the deepest discounts and the most photographer availability.
Month-by-month
January – February
Best for: budget-conscious couples, intimate weddings, dramatic snow portraits at Stone Arch Bridge or the North Shore. Sunset around 5:00–5:45pm — plan your ceremony before 3:30pm if you want any natural light for portraits.
March
The hardest month aesthetically — snow is usually patchy and the landscape is brown. Great pricing and availability, but plan an indoor venue with strong window light.
April
Unpredictable. You might get 70° sunshine or a spring blizzard (2018 and 2023 both had April snowstorms). Indoor ceremonies recommended. Magnolia and crabapple blossoms start late April in the Twin Cities.
May
Lilacs, tulips, fresh green leaves. Sunset around 8:30pm by month''s end. One of my favorite hidden-gem months — venues are still bookable 6–8 months out and the light is gorgeous.
June
The longest days of the year (sunset 9:00–9:05pm). Reliable weather, peony season, and lush green backdrops. Books out 12–14 months in advance for Saturdays.
July
Hot and humid in the Twin Cities — 85–95°F is common. Schedule first-looks early, plan ceremony shade, and budget for outdoor heat. Sunset around 9:00pm gives incredible golden hour at 7:30–8:30pm.
August
Slightly cooler than July but still warm. Sunflowers, wildflower fields, and warm evening light. Excellent for North Shore and lake weddings.
September (early)
The shoulder month — still warm, leaves just starting to turn. Often more bookable than late September and visually almost identical.
Late September – Mid October
Peak season. Maple foliage peaks around Oct 5–15 in the Twin Cities (Boundary Waters peaks 1–2 weeks earlier). Books out 14–18 months in advance. Sunset 6:30–7:00pm — perfect golden hour timing.
Late October – November
Bare trees, moody light, often the first snow flurries. Underrated for couples wanting a quiet, cinematic feel. Sunset 4:45–5:30pm.
December
Holiday weddings are magical at venues with twinkle lights and candlelight. Outdoor portraits at frozen lakes or the Stone Arch Bridge in fresh snow are unforgettable — bundle up.
How season affects pricing
Most Minneapolis wedding photographers — including me — keep pricing consistent year-round, but availability is the real cost. Peak fall Saturdays book first, so couples who want a specific date have less negotiating room on the calendar. Off-season (Jan–March, late November) is where you''ll find more flexible date options and the ability to add coverage hours without rushing.
Booking lead time by month
- Late Sept – Mid Oct Saturdays: 14–18 months ahead
- June Saturdays: 12–14 months
- May, July, August, early September: 9–12 months
- Winter & weekday weddings: 4–6 months is usually enough
My honest recommendation
If foliage and golden hour matter most → target Oct 4–18, book 14+ months out. If you want the longest day and the best odds of perfect weather → pick a mid-to-late June Saturday. If budget and flexibility matter more than the calendar → February or early March at a venue with great indoor light is a dramatically underrated choice.
Whatever month you choose, I''d love to hear about it. Check my date or read about my wedding photography packages.
