How to Prepare for a Boudoir Shoot: The 30-Day Minneapolis Photographer Guide

How to Prepare for a Boudoir Shoot

I''m Emma Ziegler, a Minneapolis boudoir photographer, and I send this exact prep guide to every client the moment they book. Follow it and you''ll show up rested, hydrated, confident, and ready to be photographed — not panicked at 2 a.m. the night before.

Quick Answer

Start 30 days out by hydrating heavily, sleeping 7+ hours, exfoliating weekly, and shopping wardrobe early. 7 days out, do a trial of any new skincare and book a clear-polish manicure. 24 hours out, skip the gym, eat real meals, take off tight clothing an hour before bed, and lay out 3–5 outfits. Day of: arrive with clean dry skin, no lotion, no makeup, hair washed the night before.

30 Days Out

  • Hydration: half your body weight in ounces of water daily. Skin reads this on camera.
  • Sleep: 7+ hours. The single biggest under-eye fix is rest.
  • Exfoliate weekly — body and face. Smooth skin lights beautifully.
  • Shop wardrobe now so you''re not panic-buying lingerie 48 hours before.
  • Start any new skincare or retinol now, never within a week of the shoot.
  • Book your manicure for 1–3 days before. Clear, nude, or classic French. Skip glitter and chips.

7 Days Out

  • Do a hair color touch-up if needed (roots show in detail shots)
  • Wax or laser 3–5 days before, not the day before — irritation lingers
  • Confirm your outfits fit this week, not "almost"
  • Avoid any new skincare, peels, or facials — no surprises
  • Cut back on sodium and alcohol the last 3 days to reduce bloating
  • Print or screenshot your inspiration images and share with your photographer

24 Hours Out

  • Skip the gym. Post-workout flush, soreness, and DOMS show up on camera.
  • Eat real meals — protein at every meal. Sessions run 4+ hours total.
  • No tight socks, leggings, or bras for at least 60 minutes before bed — elastic leaves marks that take hours to fade
  • Lay out 3–5 outfits, robe, nude underwear, your snack of choice, water bottle
  • Wash your hair tonight, not the morning of (most hairstylists prefer day-old hair)
  • In bed by 10 p.m. — non-negotiable

Morning of the Shoot

  • Shower and shave/wax if you haven''t already
  • No lotion, no makeup, no perfume — your HMUA artist needs clean skin
  • Dry hair fully (or per your stylist''s instructions)
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing to the studio — a slip dress, sweatpants and a button-down, anything without elastic
  • Eat breakfast. Bring a snack. Drink water.
  • Arrive 5 minutes early, take a breath in the parking lot, and walk in

Mindset Prep (The Part Most Guides Skip)

Everyone is nervous. Every. Single. Client. The 30-second exhale that happens after the first 10 photos is universal. You don''t need to be a model — my job is to pose your chin, your fingers, your hips, your eyes. You just have to show up.

If you''re spiraling the night before, here''s the truth: the version of you who booked this shoot did it for a reason. Trust her.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I book a boudoir shoot?

4–8 weeks for a regular session. 4–6 months for bridal boudoir so the album arrives before your wedding.

Should I work out before my boudoir shoot?

Maintain your normal routine, but skip the gym for 24–48 hours before the shoot. Photos look better with calm muscles and no flush.

What should I eat before a boudoir session?

Protein-forward meals. Eggs, oatmeal, chicken, salmon, complex carbs. Skip heavy salt and carbonation the day of (bloat). Drink water all day.

Can I drink alcohol before my boudoir shoot?

One glass of champagne in the studio is fine and pretty common. Anything more dehydrates your skin and dulls your eyes on camera.

What should I do with my hair the night before?

Wash and dry it the night before. Most boudoir hairstylists prefer day-old hair because it holds curl and texture better.

How do I calm my nerves before a boudoir shoot?

Eat, hydrate, get there 10 minutes early, and remind yourself that every client felt exactly this 5 minutes before the camera came up. By image 10, the nerves are gone.

What if I get my period the day of the shoot?

It''s fine — most photographers (myself included) reschedule for free if you''d like, or shoot through it with extra breaks. Tell me ahead of time so I can plan posing.
