Lake Minnetonka Wedding Photography: Venues & Best Light

Lake Minnetonka is 14,000 acres of water with 125 miles of shoreline, and almost every bay of it faces a different direction. That single fact drives everything about photographing a wedding out here, because the difference between a spectacular sunset portrait and a flat one is whether your venue looks west.

Where couples get married around the lake

Wayzata and the north shore

Wayzata gives you the lake's most polished downtown: the Wayzata Depot, the boardwalk along Lake Street, and hotel and club venues with genuine water frontage. Sunsets here read across the open bay, and the Depot lawn is one of the few walkable ceremony spots directly on the water.

Excelsior and the south shore

Excelsior's Water Street is a full block of historic storefronts ending at the Commons and the lake. It is my favorite portrait walk on Minnetonka because you get a small-town main street, a park, a beach, and a dock within a five-minute loop. The Commons pavilion and several restaurant venues host receptions right at the shoreline.

Deephaven, Spring Park, and Tonka Bay

The quieter bays hold private estate venues, yacht clubs, and Al and Alma's charter boats out of Mound and Spring Park. This is where the classic Minnetonka wedding happens: ceremony on a lawn, reception on a boat or in a club with the water in every window.

Gale Woods Farm and the west end

Out past Mound, Gale Woods Farm gives you the rare combination of working farm and lake frontage. If you want a barn aesthetic without giving up the water, this is the one venue that does both.

Timing sunset over the water

Minnetonka's best light happens in the 40 minutes before sunset when the sun sits low over open water and the whole bay turns gold. To get it, three things have to line up: your venue's shoreline faces roughly west or southwest, you are not seated for dinner during it, and we have already scouted where to stand.

I ask every Minnetonka couple to reserve 15 minutes at sunset, wherever it falls in the reception. Slipping out between dinner and dancing costs you nothing and reliably produces the best frames of the day. On a June wedding, sunset is roughly 9:00 PM; in late September it is 7:00 PM, which usually lands right in the middle of dinner. Plan for it.

Are boat wedding portraits worth it?

Yes, with one caveat: wind. On a calm evening a pontoon or charter gives you angles nobody shooting from shore can match, plus a moving background as the light changes. On a windy afternoon, hair becomes unmanageable and the boat's motion limits my shutter speed. I always plan a shore-based alternative for the same time slot.

• Noerenberg Memorial Gardens, Orono — formal gardens on the shoreline; permits and rules are strict, so confirm access well in advance.

Logistics that are specific to the lake

• Distances are deceiving. Excelsior to Wayzata is a mile across the water and 20 minutes by car. Never plan a portrait location on the opposite shore.
• Parking is tight in summer. Both Wayzata and Excelsior fill on July and August weekends. Arrange vendor parking in advance.
• Bugs and wind are real. Shoreline ceremonies in late June get both. A microphone matters more here than at an indoor venue.
• Fall is underrated. Late September and early October on Minnetonka give warm color on the shoreline, calm water, and a 7:00 PM sunset that fits a normal timeline.
