Inver Grove Heights has no hotel ballroom and no dedicated wedding barn. What it does have is a city-run community centre that rents its gymnasium as a wedding package, seven bookable park shelters with published rates, and one private banquet room that seats 160. Everything is small, and almost everything is cheap.
That makes it a genuinely good town for a wedding under a hundred guests, and a frustrating one if you want three hundred. I have put together what each place actually publishes on its own website, with the rates the city prints, so you can work out in an afternoon whether Inver Grove Heights fits the day you are picturing. Where I could not confirm something on the venue's own site, I have said so rather than guessing.
What counts as a wedding venue in Inver Grove Heights?
Three categories, and they behave very differently.
- City facilities. The Veterans Memorial Community Center on Barbara Avenue rents rooms and a gymnasium by the hour, and has a separate day-rate wedding package. This is the only space in the city that the city itself markets for wedding receptions.
- Park shelters. Seven parks take reservations. These are open-air picnic shelters, not event spaces, and they suit a ceremony plus a casual meal rather than a seated dinner with a dance floor.
- Private rooms. One banquet room in the city publishes wedding availability and a capacity figure.
If none of those work, the practical move is to keep the ceremony in Inver Grove Heights and drive fifteen minutes for the reception. Eagan, Rosemount and West St. Paul all have larger rooms, and our Twin Cities venue directory covers the metro more broadly.
The Veterans Memorial Community Center wedding package
The VMCC is the closest thing the city has to a reception venue, and its rates are public. The city's event and meeting rental page lists the National Guard Gymnasium at 9,000 square feet with a banquet capacity of 300, and prices a wedding package at $1,350 per day for residents and $1,750 per day for non-residents, against a $500 damage deposit. Non-athletic hourly use of the same room is $120 for residents and $140 for non-residents.
The smaller rooms are priced by the hour on the same rental page. Community Rooms 1 and 2 combined run 2,296 square feet, seat 120 banquet style, and cost $90 an hour for residents or $100 for non-residents with a $100 damage deposit. Community Room 1 alone seats 64 banquet, and Community Room 3 seats 81. For a ceremony with a cake-and-coffee reception, a two or three hour hold on a community room is the cheapest real room in town.
What a gymnasium means for photographs
Be honest with yourself about the space. A gym is a large box with high ceilings, hard floors and, usually, overhead lighting that is efficient rather than flattering. That is not a problem for a photographer who brings lights, but it does change two decisions. First, ask whether you can hold the ceremony outdoors in the adjoining park and use the gym only for dinner and dancing. Second, decide early where the first dance will sit, because the middle of a 9,000 square foot floor is a long way from any wall you might bounce light off.
What do Inver Grove Heights park shelters cost?
The city publishes a single rate card, and it is refreshingly specific. The park shelter rental rates effective 1 January 2026 list South Valley Park at $225 for residents and $250 for non-residents, seating 90 with room for another 60 on the plaza; Swing Bridge Park at $115 and $135 for 50 people; and Groveland Park, Lions Park, Rich Valley Athletic Complex, Simley Island Park and the Veterans Memorial Community Center Park at $75 and $95 each for groups of 10 to 20. Every shelter carries a $100 deposit, and Groveland Park is closed through autumn 2026 for construction.
Two booking rules matter more than the price. Rentals come in fixed blocks of 10am to 3pm or 5pm to 10pm, and reservations for the calendar year open on 3 January, with at least seven business days' notice required. On holidays the shelters are first come, first served and cannot be reserved at all. If you want a Saturday in June at South Valley, put a reminder in your phone for the first week of January.
Note the gap in those time blocks. A 10am to 3pm hold does not cover a 4pm ceremony, and the evening block ends at 10pm. Plan the timeline around the block you actually booked, not the one you assumed. Which private venues in the city host receptions?
One that I could confirm. Drkula's 32 Bowl publishes a party and banquet room page stating that it hosts weddings and that the lower-level banquet facility holds up to 160 people with its own kitchen, bathrooms and bar, and that you may use their caterer or bring in your own. Rates are not published; you book a viewing by phone. It is a bowling centre, so expect a relaxed, loud, genuinely fun reception rather than a formal one, and expect the best pictures to come from the bar and lanes rather than the banquet room.
I looked hard at the city-owned golf course and left it out. Inver Wood Golf Course's own website markets golf outings, tournaments, leagues and lessons, and says nothing about wedding receptions or banquet space. Until that changes on their own site, I am not going to list it as a wedding venue. Several wedding directories will tell you otherwise; directories are not the venue.
What I check before photographing in a city-run space
City facilities are usually easy to work in, but they are not hotels, and the differences catch people out.
- Who unlocks the door, and when. Your rental block is when you may be in the building, which is not the same as when your florist may be. Ask what time access actually begins.
- Whether alcohol is permitted, and under whose licence. The city's rental page does not spell this out, so get it in writing from the facility before you book a bar service.
- Where people get dressed. Community centres rarely have a dedicated suite. Renting an extra small room for two hours is usually cheaper than the alternative, and it gives you somewhere quiet for getting-ready photographs.
- The rain plan. A park shelter is the rain plan for its own ceremony only if the shelter is not already full of chairs and food. Decide in advance which half of the space you sacrifice, and read our Minnesota rain plan guide before you need it.
- Clean-up time. If the block ends at 10pm and clean-up is inside the block, your last dance is really at 9.15pm.
Where the portraits go
Inver Grove Heights sits on the Mississippi bluffs, and the good light here is river light. Swing Bridge Park and Simley Island Park both put you near water and trees, which is what you want for the half hour after the ceremony. South Valley Park is more open, so it photographs best either side of midday rather than in it.
Whatever the venue, build the portrait window backwards from sunset rather than forwards from the ceremony. In practice I ask for 30 to 40 minutes of couple portraits starting about an hour before sunset, and I would rather move the dinner by fifteen minutes than lose that window.
How do you get a marriage licence in Dakota County?
Inver Grove Heights is in Dakota County, so that is where the licence comes from, and a Minnesota licence is valid anywhere in the state. Dakota County's marriage licence page says the fee is $125, reduced to $50 if you have completed 12 hours of premarital education and bring the signed form, and that a licence is valid for six months once issued. Minnesota Statutes section 517.08 is the source of both figures and of the six-month term.
In most cases both parties must appear together to sign, though the county notes exceptions. You can complete the application online first and then sign in person at the Administration Center in Hastings, the Northern Service Center in West St. Paul or the Western Service Center in Apple Valley.
