Stillwater Wedding Venues on the St. Croix

Five Stillwater venues publish enough on their own websites to plan a wedding against: JX Venue, the Water Street Inn, Loft 214, the Lowell Inn and the Outing Lodge at Pine Point. Between them they cover 16 guests to 720. The city also rents parks and a bandshell at fixed published fees.

This is a venue-by-venue guide: what each place says about its own rooms, capacities and terms, plus the city paperwork around them. Which Stillwater venues can I confirm host weddings?

Five, verified on first-party websites. They are genuinely different buildings, and the choice between them is mostly a choice about scale and about whether your guests sleep on site.

JX Venue

The old Connolly Shoe Factory at 123 Second Street North is the largest published room in town. Its own site lists 14,000 square feet with a maximum capacity of 720, comfortably seating over 300, with ceremony setup included at no extra cost, a fully stocked built-in bar with professional staff and glassware, and parking lots and ramps nearby including one directly across the street. The Historic Water Street Inn

At 101 Water Street South, right on the riverfront, the Water Street Inn publishes a Grand Ballroom for up to 250 with a wood dance floor, tables, chairs, linens and tableware included, and Papa's Rooftop for up to 150 with river views and outdoor fire tables. Food and bar come from the inn's own team, and there are 61 guest rooms and three restaurants on the property. That combination is rare in Stillwater and it removes the shuttle problem entirely.

Loft 214

At 214 Main Street South, Loft 214 is a converted lumber-era building with 4,000 square feet upstairs and 2,000 downstairs, seating 150 with capacity up to 200. The rental includes a dedicated venue lead, security, AV with microphones and a projector, adjustable lighting and a full-service bar with staff. Seven catering partners are already approved, which shortens your vendor search. Downtown parking lots and a ramp are a block or so away.

The Lowell Inn

The Lowell Inn at 102 North Second Street has been open since 1927 and still runs weddings, describing venues sized for anything from 2 to 220 guests. Parties under 20 order from the regular dining menus and larger groups from banquet menus, with hosted bar, cash bar or ticket arrangements available. There are 35 guest rooms, 23 historic and 12 in a newer annex, though the inn states it does not offer room blocks.

The Outing Lodge at Pine Point

Out of town on County Road 61, the Outing Lodge is the countryside option. Its wedding page confirms it currently books weddings, with ceremonies on the gardens and lawns, on-site bedrooms upstairs and customised menus including gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan and allergy-conscious options. It does not publish capacities or rates, so treat those as questions for the tour rather than numbers you can plan against.

Can you get married in a Stillwater city park, and what does it cost?

Yes, and the fees are refreshingly plain. The city's park reservation page sets a picnic shelter or gazebo at a $100 refundable damage deposit plus a $100 reservation fee, park open space at a $100 deposit plus a $50 fee, and the Pioneer Park bandshell at a $100 deposit plus a $125 fee. The Teddy Bear Park building is rented by floor with a three-hour minimum, from $60 midweek for the second floor to $160 at a weekend for the first, plus a $100 deposit per floor.

Two dates govern everything else. City parks are open mid-April to mid-October, weather dependent, from 6am to 10pm, and reservations for the following year open on 15 October. If you want a specific park on a specific Saturday, that mid-October date is the one to put in your calendar. Reservations must be made at least a week in advance, and cancelling inside 20 days forfeits the fee.

What do the park rules actually restrict?

More than most couples expect, and every one of these has bitten a real wedding somewhere.

• No single party gets exclusive use of an entire park, and the city does not post signs showing existing reservations. Your ceremony shares the park with whoever else is there.
• Anything staked into the ground, including tents, canopies and arches with ground pins, needs approval, and staking is not allowed at all in Lowell Park, Teddy Bear Park, Heritage Park or Washington Square except for approved special events.
• The Parks Department does not rent chairs, canopies, tents or PA systems. You bring them, and everything must be off site by 10pm the same day.
• Closing the road in front of the Lowell Park gazebo needs city approval, is limited to two hours, and emergency vehicles must still get through.
• No confetti or confetti-filled balloons, no recreational bonfires, and only one appliance per outlet when you use park power.
• Alcohol no longer requires a permit to consume in Stillwater parks, of any type, except at Teddy Bear Park where it is not allowed. Selling alcohol is different and needs a temporary liquor licence from the City Clerk.
• Any gathering of 250 people or more in a city park requires a separate Event Application.

How bad is downtown parking on a summer Saturday?

Manageable if you brief your guests, frustrating if you do not. The city's parking information page describes free 90-minute parking in the core of Main Street, free four-hour on-street and public lot parking west of Main Street, paid on-street spaces and lots between Main Street and the river, and a paid public ramp one block west of Main. Paid areas cost $1.00 per hour from 10am to 10pm and are free outside those hours. Parking is paid by app, by text or at a pay station, and Tuesdays are free citywide downtown.

The practical version for a wedding: free 90-minute spaces are useless for a four-hour reception, so point guests at the ramp or the four-hour zones west of Main and say so on the website. Note too that the lots at several private downtown businesses are not city lots and are separately enforced. Visitors with a disability certificate or plates may park free for up to four hours in marked disability spaces, which is worth telling older relatives directly rather than leaving them to discover it.

How do you get a marriage licence in Washington County?

Stillwater is the Washington County seat, so the office is in town. The county charges $125 for a marriage licence, or $50 with a completed Reduced Marriage Fee Educator's Statement verifying premarital education. You complete an application online, then both applicants appear in person at the Washington County Government Center, 14949 62nd Street North in Stillwater, to take an oath and pay within seven days. Same-day issuance is available and the licence is valid for six months from the date of application. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 4.30pm.

The fee structure comes from Minnesota Statutes section 517.08, which requires at least 12 hours of premarital education including a premarital inventory and the teaching of communication and conflict management skills to qualify for the reduced fee. The licence is valid anywhere in Minnesota, so Wisconsin-side couples marrying in Stillwater still need a Minnesota licence, not a Wisconsin one. Venues I could not confirm

Two well-known Stillwater buildings are missing from this list on purpose. The Washington County Historic Courthouse at 101 West Pine Street rents the historic courtroom and two small meeting rooms at published hourly rates, but the county's own rental pages describe meetings, seminars and business entertainment and do not state that weddings or ceremonies are available. Rather than assume, I have left it out. The Zephyr Theatre on Main Street North publishes programming and education pages but no rental terms, spaces or capacities, so it is out too. If either publishes a wedding rental page, it belongs here.
